learnin Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 Probably an ignorant question but here goes. I like using a baitcaster for topwater fishing but there's times when a backhand cast is all that will work for getting the bait where you want it. I realize the pros and some amateurs can make this look easy but I've found it's a lot tougher than it looks. The only way I can sometimes get it right for both reasonable distance and accuracy is to lighten up considerably on spool tension which also sometimes results in backlashes. Am I on the right track re spool tension or is this type cast something that just takes a lot of practice to master. After working on it for a while it's easy to understand the popularity of spinning gear. Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted October 26, 2024 Super User Posted October 26, 2024 You could just cast with your other hand and eliminate the backhand cast. 3 Quote
Bigbox99 Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 Loosen your spool tension and leave it that way. Adjust your brakes and you should be good to go. 1 Quote
Dan N Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 Learn to use your thumb.once you master that, no need to ever change anything. And as green pig said, learn to cast with both hands. It’s not hard to do, just take a little time and practice. 3 Quote

papajoe222 Posted October 27, 2024 Posted October 27, 2024 I don’t adjust for backhand casts, but I do make sure the rod loads up on the back cast. I sounds like you may e attempting to just lob your bait resulting in reduced distance. 2 Quote
