Justbass11 Posted October 22, 2024 Posted October 22, 2024 I have posted before on what rod to get for a jig rod. I know I want it to be 7’6”I think, but do I want a medium heavy or heavy? That is the question. It could also be used for glide baits. I will say that being 6’2”and just over 300lbs I’ve always have used 7’ for all my fishing needs. Anyway thanks for the input. Quote
MediumMouthBass Posted October 22, 2024 Posted October 22, 2024 What kind of jigs? Football, swim, punching, flipping, finesse? And no one can really tell you if you need a MH or H rod, for an example, i have a few M and MH rods that have more than double my H rods lure weight ratings.... Every rod material, and brand have different ratings. Some are just extremely backwards the way they do it. Like one of my swimbait rods, can handle up to 6oz, and its only a medium. And since theres no set standard in the industry, ive no longer based a rod by its power, more its ratings. This has been helpful especially with Dobyns. So to give you a more, helpful answer for your question, whats the lowest, and highest ounce lure you would be throwing the most? (Including the glidebaits) 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 22, 2024 Super User Posted October 22, 2024 Back when I had my boat and was bass fishing a lot carried 15+ combo’s. Only my swimbait rods were over 7’10” to 8”. My rods were 6’10” jig & worm to 7’ rods. The 1 rod 7’5” was Irod IRG 754F Freds Magic Stick designed to be a frog rod, 1/2 oz to 2 oz lures rated H. I bought the rod for frog fishing the Delta and Clear lake occasionally. I started using the Magic Stick for lures 1 1/2 oz deep diving crank baits, rats and wake baits to 1 3/4 oz and 1 oz jigs w/larger trailers. Very versatile rod the newer gen 3 is lighter weight. $150 Tom Quote
PaulVE64 Posted October 22, 2024 Posted October 22, 2024 Im finding a 7'6" to be a fantastic wading rod for my river smallie needs. Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted October 22, 2024 Super User Posted October 22, 2024 It really depends on what type of jigs and cover you want. And, if also formalizes what size glides. I’ll throw the Falcon amistad out as a good compromise rod. It’s a great 1/2-3/4 oz jig rod (and will do up to a 1.25 well also for pitching). With 20# big game or similar I have no problem throwing it into heavy pads or laydowns. It’s only 7’3” so not quite the length you want. I also throw 6” magdrafts and 2.5oz a rigs on it. Again, it’s probably not perfect for them, but it does well enough and I don’t need to carry and technique specific rod. rick Quote
Super User FishTank Posted October 23, 2024 Super User Posted October 23, 2024 @Justbass11 How heavy are you wanting to throw? Both Jigs and Glides. Quote
softwateronly Posted October 23, 2024 Posted October 23, 2024 @Justbass11 that's tough because every manufacturer is different. I'd say a loomis mbr 904, a 5 power dobyns, a phenix feather 7'7XH, and an expride 7'7H could all do jigs to small swimbaits. All of these have enough tip to blur the MH/H line and the backbone to not get beat up by a bass. And if you want a way out there rec, the cheapest rod in cost but most crazy versatile long rod I own, it's this Major Craft salt rod that I've thrown 3/8oz jigs to a-rigs to magdrafts to deep cranks all while being plenty of sensitive. Legit 1/4-2oz doable with the right reel. $159 to your door. https://shimreels.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=40461 scott Quote
GReb Posted October 23, 2024 Posted October 23, 2024 MH, H, etc is subjective and changes from manufacturer to manufacturer. Look for lure ratings in the 1/2 oz to 1 1/2oz range for most jig applications. A 1/2 oz jig with a trailer will weigh around 1 oz ish Quote

Not saying it can't be done but, the chance of one rod doing both a 1/2 football and say an s-waver 168 well enough to not make you regret the purchase in the long run is fairly high. Especially if you are dragging a football vs flipping a jig, those to me are even different rods. Holiday season is coming get a St Croix Bass-x heavy 7'10" for your glides (80-100$) and one of the Daiwa DXB 7ft 5in bottom contact rods from tw for ~$100. Even a Tatula XT is a great rod for 100. Don't have to get those rods but it gives you an idea of what to look at. If you Have to have a single rod, the Megabass Perfect Pitch models or Evergreen Combat Stick 73Hmf (feels just like a Perfect Pitch) are really diverse in what you can do with them. Quote

I agree with you that dragging and pitching would be very different. But, If we're talking about an SWaver 168 and a 3/4 oz pitching jig, then the amistad would actually be a good choice (a rod that is often recommended for the same applications as the perfect pitch). I think the Falcon dragger 2 would also (7'6" 1/2-1.5 oz) but I haven't held it or fished it. Quote

Both of which make great trailers for a big jig you’re swimming along. That said, that’s a pretty extreme example. a magnum rage bug is a half ounce also. Quote
