afendrbass Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 They offer so many reels, baitcasting and spinning. What does anyone know about the quality and manufacturers behind these reels. Any reel worth buying, less than or equal to $130? Good, bad, whatever...what do you think about the reels? :-? Quote
Live.2.Fish Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I just bought an extreme baitcaster about 2 weeks ago. It seemed like a decent reel. I haven't used it yet. I hope its good, as it is also my first BPS reel. Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted January 30, 2007 Super User Posted January 30, 2007 If you are willing to spend that much I would stick with a reputable brand. That way you know you can get parts for it down the road. May I suggest a Shimano Citica . Quote
NBR Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 You will no doubt get a lot of negatives but my experience has been excellant. I have 2 or 3 Shimanos including a Curado, 2 or 3 Daiwas, 2 Quantums, 2 Pfluegers, 2 BPS Rick Clunns, a BPS Prolite finesse and an older BPS that is so old there are probably no parts available. I bought this last item as a spare before I went to Canada on a boat in trip. This reel has become my favorite and it will be a sad day when it fails. I have been using baitcasters for over 60 years so my thumb is pretty well educated. Frankly outside of the cost I can't see much difference in any of them. I set the drags on the light side and use my thumb if I want to apply more pressure on the fish. So drags aren't important to me. I do prefer an externally adjustable drag control but that is no big deal either. Personally, I think they are a pretty good value and if I was in the market for a new reel BPS would get a lot of consideration. Quote
NBR Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I forgot, I am 99% sure Pflueger makes their baitcasters. Quote
MattStrykul Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I have 2 extreme baitcasters, one is a normal one and the other is the wide spooled one and they are GREAT reels! My brother also has one and he loves his as well. I recommend this reel! Quote
northgabassfisher Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 ive heard there good reels but like said above you cant get any parts for them so if they break then your out of a reel and some money lol NBR, i do belive they are pfluger reels. Quote
hi_steel_basser Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 WORTH IT. For the money, they are great, especially if you buy the combo. I wouldnt buy just rod or reel, in this area, there are other rods and reels of equal or slightly better value. Quote
Fishin49er Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Im going to agree with KU and suggest the Citica, I love mine. Quote

I can't see paying $220 for a BPS Johnny Morris Elite when you can get a Daiwa Zillion for $250 or a Shimano Chronarch for $270 or a Curado for $200. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted January 31, 2007 Super User Posted January 31, 2007 I've replaced a bunch of reels this year, 5 to be exact, with BPS Pro Qualifier low profile reels. All are 8 bearing reels and they're used. We'll see how they hold up this year. Outwardly they operate quite nicely. As for whether to buy one if you've got $130 bucks to spend. I probably buy a single name brand reel like a Garcia, Pflueger or Shimano. Quote
tacoman Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 i've got a david fritts reel. i used it alot last year and really like it. thinking about getting another. Quote
curiousangler Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I guess I will be the odd one , I probably have 20 spinning and baitcasting mostly extremes or pro qualifers they are all I use I love them for price and durability. they have held up great for me oh yeah I also got a couple of the fritts ones for cranking they are awesome to . Quote
dink Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 They are decent reels. I have 3 Rick Clunns and a Prolite Finesse. I will probably not buy another BPS reel for durability reasons. For arguments sake, I do fish 180 - 250 days a year and rarely less than 8 hours a day. I put ALOT of time on my equipment. The BPS reels tend to start breaking down for me after 2 - 3 years. I have had problems with the worm gears and pawls wearing out as well as return springs breaking. That being said, someone who might fish only 50 - 100 days a year may get 10 years out of one of these reels. Just food for thought and my own experience. Quote
LrgMouthCatcha Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I have had 3 Extremes... hated them, and they all messed up (and I take good care of my stuff) Don't recommend them. I have 2 Pro Qualifiers and have had no problems... I wouldn't recommend them, pay a little extra and get a name brand - they will have parts and will fix them if something happens. JMHO Quote
NBR Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I have never had to repair any reel that was less than 10 years old and I wouldn't spend the money to repair a reel with 10 year old technology. You can send them back to BPS for repair. Quote
BassChaser57 Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I LOVE my Johnny Morris signature baitcaster. YES, they DO repair and service their products--(UNLIKE CABELAS)-- I would Give the reel a 10!!! You can't go wrong with Shimano. Quote
harshman Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I love my Johnny Morris signature series reel but have had bad luck with the extreme reels. I had three of them returned before I upgraded to the JM. I haven't used the Rick Clunn version but it seems like a good reel mostly a cheaper knock off of the JM it would appear. Best part about BPS reels is if you do have trouble they have a great customer service staff for the most part. Simply return the reel within the warranty and they give you a new one no questions asked.Same for their rods, even if the damage to the item is your fault as long as it is in the warranty time frame they don't care. Super User roadwarrior Posted January 31, 2007 Super User Posted January 31, 2007 Why buy "maybe" when you can own "for sure" for about the same price? Shimano is good-to-go up front and dependable over time. Quote
YJsmitty Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 If you don't have the money and can't spend over $200 on a reel I would go with a BPS reel I have a Extreme that I bought as a combo for $50 and it has never failed me. I also have a Mega Tournament that I also bought as a Combo for $30 and never failed me. But if I could of and if I had the money I would of went with the name brand like a Shimano Curado on a G Loomis But for me i don't have the money so I go for the BPS. Joseph Quote

The gal told me the emblems weren't available seperately but the guys would have to pull them off some side plates. She doubted they'd do it. Lo and behold, when my drag washers came another bag with 3 side emblems came. Thumbs up to them for that. Quote
Bud Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 Exactly. I can't see paying $220 for a BPS Johnny Morris Elite when you can get a Daiwa Zillion for $250 or a Shimano Chronarch for $270 or a Curado for $200. Stay with the Daiwa or Shimano Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 1, 2007 Super User Posted February 1, 2007 Even though I have 2 Extreme Baitcasting reel's and love them, at the higher pricing points that the Johnny Morris reel's sell, I would go with Daiwa, Shimano,Quantum,Pflueger, or Abu Garcia. I have nothing bad to say about my Extreme's, one is 3 years old and has been trouble free, the other is only 1 year old, been good so far. I always ALWAYS buy BPS stuff when it's on sale. I paid $49 a peice for those reels when they go on sale. Every year at this time BPS always puts last years models on clearance to make room fo rthe new years models, that's when I buy. I probably wouldn't even pay full price for those Extreme's, not because they are not worth it, but because I know in a few months they will be marked down. Quote

They service threir reels and every BPS product I have I like as for many people here and a lot of my friends, As much as all the other brands. Finances forced me to look at Cabelas and BPS in order to switch to baitcasting. I am glad that happened because i have been pleastly surprised by their quality. Even though I bought a reel from Cabelas I will probably stick with BPS because of all the horror stories about lack of service It seems time and experience and service equal reputablity and I think BPS shows that for thier rods and reels and Cabelas for their rods, they gotta work on service for their reels it seems Quote
