Besides jerkbaits in the spring,

Fall topwater is my jam !

I really look forward to it.

And that 'pause' rules.

Do you all use braid on baitcasters for Topwater baits with treble hooks? Things like poppers, walking baits, whopper ploppers etc.

Depends on the lure....lighter ones like poppers and smaller jerks are on spinning, heavier ones like ploppers, spooks and larger jerks are on casting.

My spinning reels are all braid to leader...that reel is 15# 832 to 8# InvizX.

Casting reel is straight 10# YZH.

Eh, I’m not a big fan of that guy. 😉 Kidding of course!

On a serious note, you basically said to use exactly what I would have thought to use. Mono for most treble hooked top water baits.

It’s surprising to me how many people use straight braid for poppers, spooks etc. I would expect braid to rip the hooks out of the fishes mouth. Anyone care to delve into more detail on using braid for those setups?

I use straight braid with spooks, poppers, and Ploppers. 30 lb. test. I use a sweep and reel method to set the hook with more reeling than sweeping. I'm a long caster and 85% of my bass hit at the ends of my long casts, so I lost a lot of bass when I using stretchy mono. I'm not suggesting that this is the best way to go. It's just the way that works for me. Remember that I'm in canoe, so I'm not standing and not having the hook-setting power that men standing in bass boats have. Heck, when I set the hook, my canoe moves toward the bass, lessening the power of my hook setting.
