Super User Jig Man Posted October 1, 2024 Super User Posted October 1, 2024 I’ve been using and making them since they first came out. I used to fish them a lot but over time I have fished them less and less. If the fish are on them it is great, if not it becomes a drudgery so I put it down and pick up something fun. Quote

You can also go with something like the Hog Farmer Mini Rig (3 Wire 3 Blade) if you are in a kayak, state with limits or don't have a dedicated rod. Total weight on this one with 3 4" easy shiners is just about 1.5oz and it's one of my favorite lures all year but especially when they are really going after shad. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted October 1, 2024 Global Moderator Posted October 1, 2024 I’ll say no. Just feels silly and wrong to me when casting it and the fish I’ve caught are hooked all over the body. Seems like a dragging hook apparatus (and we can only Use 3 hooks) im glad tourney trails banned it, I think they did it for optics not state regs. Dangle a bunch of baits off a chandelier and drag the waters for bass doesn’t look that good to me, more fit for tuna in the deep blue seas. I change the channel when I see tactical bassin throwing them over and over and over Quote

Lake Fork is a great example as well. IIrc you can still fish an A-Rig in the non BFL MLF events as well. I hear you on how hooking fish outside the mouth as stupid for us bass anglers but, unfortunately, there are really bad people who intentionally snag fish to catch them in my state which is why my state has them. These idiots throw out their “lures” into a school and yank away. One method is a large egg weight on top of a large treble. Throw it into a school and yank away. Another is to use a longer than needed leader with a hook at the end. Then you drift that line with the current so it lands in the fishes mouth and then you reel up the slack and yank back. Of course the hook will be outside the mouth, a clear sign the fish did not willingly take the hook. So yeah, stupid is as stupid does (learned that from an old timer lady who loves to fish) it makes some states have to make such rules to curb the idiocy and shameless punks. To the topic, I imagine these rigs are effective. I just haven’t gotten around to trying it yet. 1 Quote
Woody B Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 I don't throw an A-rig often, but it's certainly something I'm not going to give up. It's really cool to watch an A-rig, and Bass on live sonar. 5 hooks are legal here. I've caught as many as 4 on one cast. They didn't all 4 hot at once though. Next time any of you are using an A-rig when you hook the first, don't immediately bring it in. Other will hit the other hooks. I've had the best luck with 4 various swim baits, and a Johnson Silver Minnow on the rearmost position. Regardless of number of hooks, I look at an A-rig as an oversized spinnerbait. 2 1 Quote
