GAcraw22 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I'm thinking of getting a BPS Extreme or Bionic Baitcasting rod. I'm thinking of a MH model. What do I need to do with the balancing kit for weight adjustments? Do i need to get a kit that is the same (MH) or get a lighter kit (M) to balance it. In other words, how does the BPS balance kits work on the rods (sensitivity, handling, kit size, etc.)? Thanks for all your suggestions!! Brent Calhoun, GA Quote
Super User cart7t Posted January 30, 2007 Super User Posted January 30, 2007 Buy the cheaper balance kit they sell, I thinks it's around half the price of the XPS kit. They're basically the same thing. Both are rubber slip on butt caps with weights. The XPS kit has pretty gold colored weights of different sizes (which you can't see with the butt cap on) and the cheaper model just has regular lead weights. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted January 30, 2007 Super User Posted January 30, 2007 The more expensive version screws into the rod, and only works on selected models of rods from BPS. The cheaper version will work on any rod. After having used both, I'd recommend that you try out a buddy's rod, if you have a friend who has one of these. I really don't like the larger buttcap that these add to the rod, particularly the cheap version. I kept getting it caught on my vest and shirtsleeves. Finally decided it wasn't worth the hassle and took it off. The screw-in version will probably soon follow the cheap one into the junk drawer. Cheers, GK Quote

earthworm77 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I'll tell you what, I have very negative feelings about the weight balancing kits. I truthfully do not think you will need one. If your rod is top heavy or bottom heavy, it should be minimal. These kits really over compensate in my opinion. My tournament partner gave me a rod as a gift with one on it. I never looked at it. At the end of the fishing season I developed a really bad pain in my flipping elbow. I took the system apart to discover 3oz of weights. I didn't notice it at the time and shame on me for not looking but you have to be really careful. I have since been fishing for 3 or 4 years with Kistler Heliums and have not had the problem. Many people(normally people who do not own a Helium) say that because the rod is light, it is out of balance. I disagree. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 30, 2007 Super User Posted January 30, 2007 i respectfully have to disagree with craig.i think it depends on the individual.everybody is built different.what may throw one guy's elbow out may make the next guy's better.i had the exact opposite problem.i have to balance my rods otherwise my elbow goes out.if it works for you then do it.i personally like the slide on butcaps the best. http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=16515&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=VIEWCART Quote
earthworm77 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Dodge, your correct about that, it is all based on the individual. Curious, how much weight do you use on an average set up? I guess maybe in my experience 3oz was a lot. Maybe an oz or so would not have caused a problem. I still kind of feel that with a hjigher end rod, a balancing system shouldn't be necessary. The rod I was using was a Johnny Morris and it happens to be a very good rod. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 30, 2007 Super User Posted January 30, 2007 the lighter the rod the less weight it takes to make it perfect.my 6-6 johnny morris took hardly any weight to balance it to where i like it.i like it neutral right at the trigger.i put the rod upside down with the reel on my finger to check it. New 2 Bass Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I've got 3 Extreme rods. My original one w/ my chronarch 101. I loved it so much I got two more with another chronarch and a curado. NO balancing kits. I like them like that. I got lures w/ the money I was going to get for the kit. You can try it if you like. The monkey is not going to be happy if you get it. ;D Al PS get the rod on sale $70 not $100 Quote
