His intuition must be telling him to stay on the water and catch more brownies! I think I have some bass fishing intuition ~ Some times I listen to it, sometimes I don't. You see, I'm also as stubborn as all get out. So it's an a bit of a mental tug-o-war every trip out. Admittedly, I have said right out loud on many occasions, "I should go over there" or I should tie on this or that bait. And it's paid off a few times, enough that when it pops into my little pea brain, I'll consider it, sometimes even acting on it. However, head down, sticking with the plan and putting in the work, has out produced any 'intuition' I might think I have TEN TIMES OVER; especially for plus size fish. YMMV A-Jay 5 Quote
Lottabass Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 I've had this happen but not often enough. I try to be "in the zone" as Rick Clunn describes it. Listening to your gut and acting on those feelings is a good skill to cultivate, but I think it requires practice. Those "pigeon flutterings" are easy to ignore or if you are distracted, easy to miss. Quote
Functional Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 I have the opposite. I'll make the perfect cast tight to cover, no splash, work it perfectly in a area that SCREAMS fish and be on pins and needles with a half smile waiting for the crash only to get the lure to the boat and ask "what the hell?" 1 Quote

I do know, about once or twice every trip. I'm not talking about the obvious line in shallow water where a bass is charging your lure or FFS, where you see a bass rising to your lure, but that little flutter inside, much like Spiderman's tingle, where you say, "Hey, a bass is about to hit." and then it does. It could be I'm seeing a shift in the water made by a bass around my lure that I can't actually to define it with words because it's so subtle. It could also be that my lure is sitting, structure, cover, and weather-wise, in a situation so similar to others where I've caught bass that I'm making a very good guess that one is about to strike. Or it could be straight-up Spidey-sense. Whatever it is, it feels a little like a pigeon is fluttering inside of me and I prepare to set the hook because a bass is about to strike. Yeah I think anglers develop a level of intuition over time and learn when to anticipate strikes. I think I anticipate strikes all the time and only remember (barely) the ones that actually happened. Gives me chills and an adrenaline rush that I crave. Something I noticed a while ago with all types of fishing is that I have very vague memory of strikes and my reflexes/lizard brain handle the rest. This can be a good and bad thing lol. A while back I was hopper fishing (topwater) for trout and I was setting the hook way early reflexively and my timing was off all day. The fishing was amazing and I wasted it. It was super frustrating for me and the other guy in the boat. There was also an old 60 Minutes segment on Bassmaster and to prove that the anglers knew what they were doing and it wasn't luck they showed Jimmy Houston calling his shots. 1 Quote
crypt Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 it is one of those feelings that happens once in a while. when I feel it I tend to get nauseous. that's when I know the day is gonna be a good day. and yes I have known at times when a fish is gonna hit. I just wish I had the feeling more. my guts not what it used to be. 2 Quote
papajoe222 Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 I have that happen once or twice every time out. It's like the anticipation slowly grows as I reel in my lure and then it happens.................................I fart, and the feeling passes. 3 Quote
thediscochef Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 Do I get the spidey sense from getting bit by more spiders at the lake? Lol in all seriousness yes pretty frequently, but when I'm fishing a walking bait this time of year i expect to get hit every third or fourth cast so the stats may be a bit skewed 2 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted October 5, 2024 Author Super User Posted October 5, 2024 I had it happen my last fishing trip. I was scanning for where to cast next, I looked at an unlikely open water spot, and thought, "Oh, there's a bass there." An 18-incher hit as soon as the lure landed. Quote

Absolutely. Intuition, as it applies to fishing, is simply a feeling about what may work on based on previous experience. 2 Quote
Crow Horse Posted October 7, 2024 Posted October 7, 2024 This "intuition", or sense of knowing is an inherent ability in all of us. For most, even those who stumble through life in the unconsciousness of consciousness can develop this. One doesn't need to have a trauma (emotional or physical), illness, or any other life altering event to open this conduit. There is a lot of information published about this phenomenon. I've had a number of occasions when I knew it was going to be fish on. It's an unusual feeling and difficult to describe, but it is very real. 1 Quote
