Susky River Rat Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 @GRiver I’m actually not. We may get some showers out of it. Just normally a storm like this would have went right up the east coast and into us. the storm has pushed extremely humid air our way and ruined our cool crisp start to fall weather. 2 Quote

We had one last bad band go through and that was when we lost it. For us, it was a high end tropical storm. I know we had gusts to the 70s. I don’t think we have any trees down, but I haven’t done a search yet. No flooding where I’m at… Good to hear you survived the “unsurvivable” mike! Go ahead and print the T shirt 3 Quote

Hook2Jaw Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 I've got some trees down in the back but thankfully no damage to our home. No power and the toilet won't flush due to the amount of water we got, but myself, my wife, and our two children are okay. My brother is reporting that the entire Savannah, GA area is without power. I'm without power here in Dublin as well. 4 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted September 27, 2024 Global Moderator Posted September 27, 2024 So glad you guys are good especially what it could have been. We’re good also. I lost a few soffits and got a bunch of tree debris to clean up. We had 3 tornado warnings in a matter of minutes as 3 water spouts came ashore when the wind changed direction when the eye got nearer to Tampa. The closest was 1/2 mile away but haven’t heard if any touched down. Everything for me is compared to Charle and Ian last year. Compared to those we got nothing from this. Mike 8 Quote

I was thinking about you and your family last night when I was looking at the Georgia Power outage maps and saw there were a lot of outages in your area. So far all is good at the hotel and home. The only worry now is trees uprooting in the waterlogged ground. I have power but no internet. 4 Quote
GReb Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 It’s odd how some folks in its path got 10 inches of rain and others say it barely rained and there was no thunder or lightening. The conspiracy theorists are having a field day on X 1 Quote

I don't have any conspiracy theories on the subject, I imagine it's just bands of rain moving quickly over an area. 2 Quote

No biggie, just hug the center barrier, you'll be fine. 😂 SOP for us oil haulers. Lol!!! The state of West Virginia left this slip go for six years!!! They kept painting the edge of the blacktop so they could tell when more road fell over the hill. They finally fixed it when it got almost to the center line. Little bit of a pucker factor driving over it in a 40 ton crude tanker!!! 😂 Oops, somehow I managed to get my text inserted into the quote. I have no idea how to fix it without retyping everything. So... 2 Quote

Waterville is on pigeon and goes into French broad and right into Knoxville 1 Quote
VolFan Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 Yeah but Waterville isn’t huge (not that Lure is) and there aren’t (a ton) of people right below it. Hopefully they’d already started pulling water out of Dougie for the winter and can cushion it. I’m not sure if Lure ever went or it’s still just pouring around the sides and over the top. Quote
spartyon8 Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 The flooding across the NC mountains is insane. Boone, Blowing Rock, Asheville and many more are all flooded. Here in Yadkinville, NC it wasn't bad but the river is HIGH! 2 Quote

The reality is that although they tend to cause a lot of property damage, they usually do not kill many. Heatwaves cause more fatalities in this country than all the other weather related catastrophies combined. And yet they rarely get talked about. Been dry here all month. Could use some hurricane remnants in the form of heavy rain. 2 Quote
Woody B Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 First, myself and my family are doing good. We all live on hill tops, so no threat of flooding. We've got no electricity but have generators going. It's a mess around here. Power is off EVERYWHERE. The Lake Lure dam is failing, or has failed. This morning, before I even heard of the dam problems the Broad river at Gaffney SC was within 10 feet or so of the I-85 bridge. There's several small dams down the Broad river. I hope none of them fail. At 99 Island reservoir the Broad river is 10 feet above full pool. There's trees down everywhere around here. I'm still not good due to my kidney stone, but I saw some kids with chain saws clearing trees. I was able to sit comfortably in my truck and pull some trees out of the road with my tow strap. It was nice to see young people out working for the "greater good". The truck stops along I85 are packed with travelers out of gas. There's one exit with power on. The line from the Interstate to the truck stop was at least 1/2 mile long. I suspect they'll be out of gas and diesel soon. Lake James (the first lake on the Catawba river chain) is a little over 10 feet above full pond. Rhodhiss (next lake) is 7 1/2 feet over. Lake Hickory (next) is at full pond. Lookout Shoals (next) is 8 1/2 feel over. Lake Norman is basically full. Mountain Island is 4 1/2 feet over. Lake Wylie is full but not over. The power company had been pulling the lakes down for several days. Lake Wylie was 6 feet lower a couple days ago. As I said earlier, myself and my family are doing good. Everyone impacted by this storm will be in our prayers. Internet is out. I have limited cellular data so I won't be posting much. 9 Quote
Super User Koz Posted September 27, 2024 Author Super User Posted September 27, 2024 So, after being awake and working or commuting for about 30 hours straight I get home, sleep for two hours, then get a call from work - there’s a propane leak. I’ve been running that hotel for almost 4 years and we don’t use propane. It turns out that years ago the hotel fireplace ran off of propane and was later converted to gas. When the did that, they did not reclaim the propane or remove the tanks. The tanks were in a remote part of the property and covered with debris. During the storm, a branch fell on the pressure release valve allowing gas to escape. So I make the 40 minute drive back to the hotel and meet the fire department. We call propane techs, finally get a hold of one, and he’s more than an hour away. The call is made to release the gas while the fire department sprays water over it. Luckily, it was windy and helped dissipate the gas. Four hours later we get the all clear and can reopen the hotel. I stuck around for another hour to help check in the line of guests. I’m finally back home, but now I’m overtired and can’t sleep. Plus, if I got to sleep now I’ll probably screw up my sleep schedule for a few days. But I will take tomorrow off unless we have another crisis. It’s just too bad that it will probably be too windy to head out on my kayak. I guess yard work it is. 4 Quote

VolFan Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 That is utterly insane how high it is. Just awful the amount of damage. My buddy that lives in Wateree is also flooded and without power. I’m afraid of how high Mountain Island is going to be with all this coming downstream. Quote
