Super User BrianMDTX Posted September 21, 2024 Super User Posted September 21, 2024 It’s almost autumn, but you’d never know it in this part of Texas. I was on the water at 7:00 and out at 12:30. It was 94° and sunny when I hit shore. I caught six 1 lb’ers, so not a great day. But holy heck did it sap my energy. I turned 64 four days ago. I feel it today! 7 Quote
papajoe222 Posted September 21, 2024 Posted September 21, 2024 I hear you. I'm 74 and when I got on the water Monday it was 74. Three hours later it was 89 and not a cloud to be seen. Then the breeze died and so did my energy. If I'd been on my home lake, I could have found refuge in the shade of some shoreline trees. It was my shortest outing of the season, but I have a feeling it was a preview of things to come. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted September 21, 2024 Super User Posted September 21, 2024 September has been brutal here for effort per bass. Fished yesterday for 5 hrs for 2 bass, embarrassing. Starting to not like September......oh 63 . 1 Quote
Smirak Posted September 21, 2024 Posted September 21, 2024 Yeah, I paddled around in my kayak for about 5 hrs yesterday. Caught a couple, one nice 19”er that decided as soon as I took my hand off of him on my measuring board, he made a run (jump) for it. I was trying to get my camera turned around for a pic and he said “I’m outta here” I got on the water about 1:15, out around 6. It was brutal in N Alabama. I think the heat index was like 95/96? 1 Quote
PaulVE64 Posted September 21, 2024 Posted September 21, 2024 Caught smallies, largies, walleye and pike this week. But that means hard water is coming so let's go fishing! 1 Quote
GRiver Posted September 21, 2024 Posted September 21, 2024 Well happy belated birthday @BrianMDTX…. I get days like that. A while back it was hot and I felt totally exhausted…. I put the stick pins out on the boat and just sat there. Ate some grapes guzzled a bottle of water…. I fished for about an hour after that and packed it in, think I was back at the dock before 11:00am 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 21, 2024 Super User Posted September 21, 2024 At 73 heat zaps my energy faster than anything! Ain't been on the water in month ☹️ 3 2 Quote
Brian11719 Posted September 21, 2024 Posted September 21, 2024 If it's any consolation I took my kayak out yesterday and thought I'd be funny so I spent the first 90 minutes trying to pretend like I'm a hard swimbait guy. Eventually picked up a drop shot and avoided a skunk and then moved on to an underspin and nabbed one more nice one, but it's definitely not easy out there and it's still hot AF down here so the heat can definitely drain the energy out of you. 1 Quote
river-rat Posted September 21, 2024 Posted September 21, 2024 I’m 72 and it seems like the heat gets to me more each year. I launched the boat this morning at daylight and by 12:30 the heat index was 98 degrees so it was time to call it a day and head back to the camp. I figure I have caught enough fish in my life that anything I catch from here on out is just a blessing. 4 Quote
Super User gim Posted September 21, 2024 Super User Posted September 21, 2024 I'm probably further north than 95% of the members on this forum and it's been very hot here too. Honestly, I think September has been hotter than August. The water temp was 71 on Labor Day and it's 75 degrees again now. 2 Quote
thediscochef Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 I feel you, it was only 90 down here at Rayburn yesterday but I was dying about midday. Relief is coming though, look at the forecast this week. We're gonna be in the 60s/80s in DFW by Wednesday. You know I'm gonna be searching for that topwater bite. Also a belated happy birthday! 1 Quote

Water temps this morning were right at 75 degrees. Eight bass and 13 panfish this morning. Trying again tomorrow... 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 22, 2024 Super User Posted September 22, 2024 I was on the water Friday about 7:15. I got off around noon. I caught one dink about 7:30 and after that not even a bite. I'm thinking the fish have more sense than I do in this heat. 1 Quote
Super User geo g Posted September 23, 2024 Super User Posted September 23, 2024 I get it, it doesn't get any easier. At 76 and its close to 100* almost everyday. Water temps are 90* since July.. It just makes me want to keep the boat in the garage. I do fish the banks for an hour in the afternoon, the best I can do! 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted September 23, 2024 Global Moderator Posted September 23, 2024 The sun angle is worse this time of year, always feels hotter to me in September than any other month even though the temp is slightly lower. 1 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted September 23, 2024 Super User Posted September 23, 2024 Yeah, the heat is good about that. When I was a kid, I used to wonder why my grandparents would sit out on the porch in the hot summer evenings in Texas and just stare out into the pasture and talk. They said it was because the breeze was so nice. But to me, the air conditioning was a whole lot nicer. Then, as I got older, I started to understand how the heat can really wear you out. And how sometimes just sitting on the hot porch at the end of a long day can really get your body ready for bed. It makes it easier to relax and sleep. Up until yesterday, this September has been ridiculously hot. This summer started off fairly mild, but it's hanging around a lot longer than it's supposed to. Thankfully, it's trying to cool off and might stay cool for a while. 1 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted September 23, 2024 Super User Posted September 23, 2024 Keep plenty of water on the boat. Keep the caffeine off the boat. Dehydration is a killer. Effects all parts of your body. You can be dehydrated and not even know it. Quote
Bullett Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 Im 61 years old, worked out in the oilfields here in Texas all my life on Drilling Rigs, cant work anymore due to my health. I sure cant take the heat like I used to could either. 2 Quote
Motoboss Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 At 70 I’m still good in the heat. It’s the freak’n cold, snowy winters that’s gotten to me. The thinner my blood gets the more the cold chills me to the bone. Everything is paid for and to old to move and start over 🤪 Quote
Zcoker Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Only 94? Come on down here to south Florida it’s so hot the water seems to boil. Can’t wait for it to cool off a bit. I’m usually packing up before the furnace kicks in. Then, later, it’s massive lightening bolts or hurricane warnings. Always something going on. 1 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted September 26, 2024 Super User Posted September 26, 2024 It's cool in Maine and the water is cooling fast. When I dip my fingers in it, it's just tepid. The last few fishing trips, I've worn long pants, fleece atop my wicking tops, and wool socks. However, the cooling doesn't depress me. I need to hibernate after fishing hard through the spring, summer, and fall. Sure, I'll look out the windows at the glittering white and sometimes sigh, but I'm a northern bear, built to rest through the winter. 5 Quote
