Crow Horse Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 I've been following the several threads on sunglasses because I need to get another set and want them to be more effective for fishing. Being that prescription sunglasses are so expensive, this isn't a purchase that I want to screw up. Has anyone had any issues buying them online? So far, I'm liking some of the Costa & Wiley-X offerings.... Quote
Super User Koz Posted September 16, 2024 Super User Posted September 16, 2024 As I get older my prescription keeps changing so I bought some Cocoons fit overs instead. 1 Quote
Super User islandbass Posted September 16, 2024 Super User Posted September 16, 2024 I was seriously thinking about getting prescription sunglasses for me and a coworker suggested an online place. I was very pleased with the first set of normal glasses that i will get a pair of polarized glasses with my prescription too. This place has other options you can throw into your glasses like blue light filtering, transition, bifocal, tinting and some name brand frames. I won’t name them here because I don’t know for sure if that is promoting a non sponsor so pm me and I can tell you that way. 1 Quote
Craig P Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 I don’t see any reason to not buy online, as long as you have your prescription and know you’ll like the fit of the frames you are purchasing, it is no different than your local eye doctor ordering them. 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted September 16, 2024 Super User Posted September 16, 2024 I just ordered polarized prescription sunglasses at the shop where my optometrist is. I wanted progressive lenses and have had to have them redone in the past so I was leery of going online. Quote
padlin Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 I have WileyX and couldn’t be happier with them, these are my 3rd pair in something Ike 10 years. I used an optician that deals with WileyX as opposed to online as being progressives I wanted to make sure the purple was centered, which I brought up and had measured by the optician. Mine came out perfectly. I’d suggest you work out the price online, then find an optician and see what their price is. The prices were the same comparing the WileyX site to a small town optician. FWIW, I 1st priced them at an optician in the downtown of an expensive town where a family member lives, they were double the small town guy. For this pair I got a price from a local optician, they were cheaper cause he gets his lenses elsewhere and puts them in the WileyX frames, as I’ve had good luck with WileyX’s lenses I passed on that deal. Super User MickD Posted September 16, 2024 Super User Posted September 16, 2024 I buy all my glasses on line using prescriptions from my doctor and have had no problems. The sunglasses I get are polarized progressives and they work just fine. And cost about 1/3 of what they cost locally. PM me for the source I use. Quote
Super User whitwolf Posted September 16, 2024 Super User Posted September 16, 2024 I got mine at Lens Crafters. Costa frames. They are prescription and polarized. I think they were under $300.00. Quote
Zcoker Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 I know a number of people who have used online companies for their prescription eyewear with no issues to report. Most of these companies offer full guarantees to fix or replace if things aren't correct or not to your liking. If you already know how the frames fit and like them, then all you need to do is give the online company your prescription information as well as the options desired. If you don't have a pare picked out, then go to a sunglass place and try on different pares until you find the ones that fit well and that you like, then all you need to do is order them with your prescription along with all options desired. looking45 Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 Check with your local Costco. I don’t wear glasses but a couple of friends get their prescription sunglasses from Costco. Both said they were the best price. Can’t hurt to check before you buy elsewhere Quote
padlin Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 My wife uses and is happy with progressive Costcos. Quote
Smirak Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 I wear Costas. I got them at a local eyeglass store. The only issue I had is that they didn’t include the authentic costa lens for the prescription. Ok, not a big deal, I THOUGHT. After about 6mos or so of wear, and I’m a heavy user either fishing or calling baseball games. Probably 6 hrs or more a day in the summer. Anyway, the frames were “stretched”. A few months later, the nosepad stated deteriorating. Off to the Costa warranty (which is great BTW - I’ve used it a few times over the past ~20 yrs of wearing costas). I had to take out the prescription lenses and replace with the original lens and send them back. The only place you can get authentic Costa Lenses are through Costa or LensCrafters (or at least that’s the way I understand it). All that said, I don’t wear anything but Costas. They are just the best sunglasses FOR ME. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted September 16, 2024 Super User Posted September 16, 2024 The biggest problem with buying online is fitment of the glasses. Your prescription should ensure that the glasses actually function properly and you can see well through them. But chances are good that the glasses you buy won't fit your face without some adjustment. So either you have to do that yourself, or you take it in somewhere to have that done. The other problem is sometimes you can't see the frames and/or lenses before you buy them. Otherwise, there's no problem with buying prescription sunglasses online. Quote
FishTax Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 I get cheap polarized glasses from zenni. They are cheap and you get what you pay for, but I view them as disposable if I drop them in the lake or something. I've never tried Costa's but would love to. Maybe one day, but I have trouble getting that into my budget. Quote
Bass Rutten Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Not what you asked, but I'm done buying $400 prescription shades, my last pair were wiley-x, one of the lenses popped out unbeknownst to me while it was hanging around my neck, never found it. I then purchased a pair of regular prescription glasses in a small lens/frame from zenni just for use under some cheap amazon fit-overs, super happy with the combo, under $100 total. Quote
