ConnorC Posted September 15, 2024 Posted September 15, 2024 Today I bought a MB Orochi XX Jerkbait special, I plan on using it for 110’s, 110 Jr’s, and probably soft jerks and some 1/2oz topwaters (Giant Dog-X & SB105) to free up my cranking rod (Edge Efx pro Hybrid 736). I was thinking of going the route of another JDM zillion which I already have two of and love but I am wondering if I am missing out not trying a Metanium or somthing similar? Quote
ABU is overpriced Posted September 15, 2024 Posted September 15, 2024 Always preferred the og steez and the og alphas for jerkbaits, and that for the longest time, but now i personally consider the aldebaran mgl to be the best for the job because of how the reel palms and how light it is. Of course a 21 zillion will be great, but between the two i'd go with the Alde. 3 Quote

I'm a Zillion fanboy so that's what I'd go with. 1 Quote
rangerjockey Posted September 15, 2024 Posted September 15, 2024 Any reel that casts and can roll up slack will work. When it comes to fishing stick baits it's the Indian not the arrow. Of course ,it's your hard earned. 4 Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted September 15, 2024 Posted September 15, 2024 I agree with @rangerjockey....any reel will work. All of my casting reels are Shimano Citca and Curado's, 1990's vintage. I like them so much...when I need a new reel, I scour eBay and swap meets to find them. I like the feel and performance...and the price...most can be had for $40-50 used. Most of my rods are Cabela's branded from the 1990's and early 2000's. I have added a few Fenwick's to the stable here in the past year. Good luck! 1 Quote
ConnorC Posted September 15, 2024 Author Posted September 15, 2024 Obviously any reel will work and work fine, I am more so asking if there’s anything I am missing out on in that 300-350 range (JDM) or if I should stick with the tried and true Zillion Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 I love my Metanium for JBs, but as long as its a smaller, light reel that casts really well, it doesn't matter all that much IMO. 1 Quote
lettuceBEEcereal Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 For a jerkbait/top water rod I think a Tatula 80 or a Curado 70 MGL would be plenty fine. As others have said, I don't find myself appreciating the nuances of a nicer reel on something I'm just picking up slack with. Quote

This is pretty much what I am looking for, the only thing I have had issues with has been t rigged weightless jerkbaits which may be more of a rod issue but being made for lighter lures is a plus. 1 Quote

Yup when they say it’s optimized for light rigs they mean it. I use it with a GLX 892c JWR and I’m guessing rod and reel together is about 9 ounces.. sweetest rig I own. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted September 16, 2024 Super User Posted September 16, 2024 I did a bunch of fact finding on reels for my jerk bait set up a couple years ago. First, I wanted something that could cast light, high profile lures like a jerk bait or buzzbait a long ways without having to over-throw it. Second, was an 8.1 plus gear ratio to pick up line quickly between jerks. The reels I tested were a Tatula SV TW, Tatula Elite, Shimano Chronarch, Metanium and Aldebaran. They all cast well except the Tatula SV TW (poor distance) and the best was the Tatula Elite. The Elite got easily 30% more distance than the SV TW, and 10-15% farther than the Shimano reels. 1 Quote

Most of the baits i’ll be throwing will be in the 3/8 to 1/2oz range, Shimano’s website says heavier than bfs but lighter than conventional lure’s so I am wondering if I would be better off with the Met 100 with the shallower spool? If that is what you’re going to throw I’d just go with the 100 met. I have that one also. The ideal behind the custom shallow spool along with the tuned braking was specifically for lighter line and lighter baits. However with 1/2 to 5/8 baits the Metanium 100 with its stock spool will throw that weight a country mile. The 24 Shimano Metanium 100 also has brass gearing along with the MGL3 spool. They are sweet as well. Mine is 7.0:1 . Buy it from Japan, save money. 1 Quote
Bigbox99 Posted September 19, 2024 Posted September 19, 2024 Weird take: but I really like the way a Shimano medium works jerkbaits and skips weightless plastics so my preference would be for something like a Zillion or an older Daiwa that let's me swap spools between a distance spool for jerkbaits and and SV for skipping. Something that let's me sling jerkbaits early season then skip docks once the jerkbait dies off then revert to soft jerkbaits then jerkbaits mixed with dock skipping plastics late fall when the weeds die off. All on 12# Sniper. That's what I would do if I had to do it all over again instead of having a weightless plastics skipping and casting rod as well as a jerkbait rod. 1 Quote
HawkeyeSmallie Posted September 19, 2024 Posted September 19, 2024 I have a new SHIMANO 24 SLX that I put on a Megabass Oneten special. Haven't thrown it yet but it feels pretty good in my hands. Probably break it out next week. Cooler weather is around the corner. 1 Quote
Huckfinn38 Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 I have gone down this road for the last 2 years. I have tried Lews Hypermag for weight, several Daiwas (SV TW, 70 SV TW, Coastal 80, and Alphas SV TW) and my favorite are the Shimano Curado 70K HG and the Shimano Metanium 100 HG. Both are light enough while being the most comfortable in hand and being able to cast good distances. I loved the weight of the Hypermag but it is not comfortable in hand and for me it didnt cast well. The 70k HG is a 29 ipt and the Metanium 100 HG is 30 ipt which for me is perfect. Much faster than that I found myself moving the bait when reeling up slack. 1 Quote
Peacedivision Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 Aldebaran slings jerks like nothing else I've tried and sub 5oz feels like nothing in your hand, big plus when you're working a bait all day. 1 Quote

That is true, definitely an amazing reel & it ought to be for the money they want for it, I don’t feel I need it but you know.. by January the Baitmonkey starts to lurk around my living quarters. 😝 20 hours ago, HawkeyeSmallie said: I have a new SHIMANO 24 SLX that I put on a Megabass Oneten special. If the current 50 ever goes on closeout I'm definitely getting a second. 1 Quote

I use Metanium reels, a 22 with shallow spool (love it) a 24 / 100 and two Bantam reels they are all incredible fishing reels. I guess I gotta get that Aldebaran now, I’ve never thrown one yet but I already know I’m gonna snag one 😂🤣😂 definitely a tackle junky Of course every great reel has to have a great rod, right? lol 1 Quote
