Info on older G Loomis Rod

Found a Loomis rod in a garage sale today, felt like a good jerkbait rod, bought it for $75;  can't find anything wrong with it except a couple nicks in the cork.  CBR783 6'6" medium Crank Bait Series mod-fast action, bronze color.  I tried to look it up on ALF, both new and used rods with no luck.  I'm curious for any info..   I really like the action and think I got a good rod for a good price.

The pre-Shimano Loomis rods were the pinnacle of Bass technique specific rods, nobody compared to them 20 yrs ago.    

 

My favorite cranking rod to this day is a 25+ yr old 6'6 MH F GL2.     The rod you picked up has an even better action and is more user friendly.

but I believe these rods were from the early 2000s, after the 1997 buy out. 

 

none the less If I recall they were very popular.

I didn't realize the Shimano buyout was that early.   

 

The warranty and quality of the lower price point rods were much better during the late 90s than today imho.

Those were some nice rods. The 3 power crankbait rods are pretty soft but it would also make a nice popper rod.

These sell for high dollars these days on auction websites.  They are really nice rods.  I bought one not too long ago for $100 in excellent condition and sold it for about $300.

The older Loomis rods were very nice.  Not saying the current models arent nice, but yo uhave to spend some good $ today to really get that high quality Loomis feel.  One of the biggest regrets in my fishing career was not buying another Greenwater after breaking mine.  They had been discontinued so Loomis wanted to give me another rod, but the action of that GW GLX MagM was like a unicorn

I would agree. I wish Loomis/Shimano would just quit trying to sell a lower priced rod under the Loomis banner. 

Shimano didn't buy out Loomis so much as he wanted to sell it. He has gotten a cancer diagnosis and thought it better to leave his family a boatload of money rather than a fishing rod company.

Thank goodness he beat it. He stayed on for 5 or 6 years , if memory serves .

That brings up another question : Are the Edge Rods by G Loomis comparable to the original G Loomis rods?  Is Gary Loomis really designing them?

I have or had 1 Edge rod. It was a good rod but I wouldn't buy another. I'm sure he has input in the NFC/Edge deal .

@rangerjockey Gary Loomis is still alive & active in the Edge Rod business. He had a noncompete clause with Shimano after the sale.

I would agree in the sense that you probably have to go to the Imx pro level to get really good sensitivity with Loomis now, whereas back in the 90s and early 2000s you could get the GL3 level and they were really good also. 

 

That being said, the old GL2 rods that they used to have were terrible lol I never understood how they ever stayed on the market lol

Yes I'm aware of his involvement with NFC/Edge. He also let TFO use his name some 10 years or so ago. I'm not sure that was a good idea,

I have that exact same rod. It is the best DT-6 rod I ever had. It was in their "Fiber Blend" line, below the old IMX, I think.

 

I remember casting jerkbaits on it with 12lb fluoro and thinking it was too soft to impart the right action. For light cranks it's the deal though.

Took it out today for a trial run, paired with a Zillion SV.  Did not try it with a jerkbait, instead I used a couple of small cranks that I would only throw on a spinning rod;  it bombed those lures way, way out there.  Impressive!  If you want to sell your rod for the same $75 I paid for mine, I'm in the market for another.

Yeah, some of the GL2s arent very good.  I have a 7' M ModF 3/8-1 1/4.  The rod is built very well, light and very balanced, but its so soft its almost useless.  The weight rating is so off, I wouldnt put more than 3/4 on it because it becomes an absolute noodle.  According to Loomis it was designed as  poping cork rod for wade fishing, which kind of makes sense, but its still light IMO for that.  The only use Ive found for it is fishing around jetty for weakfish, as the soft tip reduces snags, but it reduces sensitivity.  I traded a spool of PP for it lol.  The MH version is actually very nice.  Its got enough backbone and tip stiffness to be sensitive, very nice rod.

Sounds like a Loomis PR 843C popping rod, makes an excellent smaller size crank rod and structure spoon rod. The PR845C was a favorite rod for small crank and spoon rod for me.

Partly because I want to keep it, but mostly because I'm about 4400 miles from North Central Arkansas, that way ➡️

 

But yeah, I feel this rod excels with small cranks. Give it a try with jerkbaits when you can and you'll see what I mean.
