I realize that. I am saying that is a bit excessive for a JIG combo. Assuming you are talking about regular old jigs that require a heavy rod (pitching, football, etc). In which case a cheaper Loomis etc. will be just as good in that particular presentation. I have some high end gear myself, but my jig rod combo is about $360 total. No need for a super high end jig rod unless you have money to burn. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 20, 2024 Super User Posted September 20, 2024 Aside from gas and food, almost nothing. I'll need to restock some hooks this winter, but that's about it. Quote
r83srock Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 Less than many prior years that’s for sure. I did buy one new rod. I sold several reels last winter to buy some others. I purchased a new boat prop, insurance went up a bit. Didn’t burn a lot of gas. Fisheda couple tournaments, won a bit of money back. I would guess around $3000 or so when it’s all said and done. Not trying to hijack this thread but I figured I wanted to buy the most sensitive rod for jig/worm fishing. I don't need ultra sensitive for say crankbaits, topwaters, etc. But I was thinking I wanted to get a super sensitive jig/worm rod to feel the bottom/bites/etc. Seems like the "king" is NRX. I know they even make better but there's zero chance I'll go higher than that. If I can get something very similar for less I'm all ears. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 20, 2024 Super User Posted September 20, 2024 Probably depends on what your doing. If you're punching mats, then tie 4' of rope on the end of a cue stick and have at it. If you're stroking a finesse jig or working in spare wood/brush cover, then maybe you want something where you can discern the subtle tick of a bite from basic contact with hard cover. Quote
softwateronly Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 @HawkeyeSmallie This is my first year with this rod, but it has quickly become my favorite bottom contact rod 1/4-5/8oz, around $245 but costly shipping from japan. Was worried about the 6'6 length originally but absolutely love it for working cover. https://www.plat.co.jp/shop/catalog/product_info/language/en/products_id/74032/cPath/38_4055_170_7555/rod/majorcraft-days-360-d360c-66mh-shipping-is-required.html My other favorite jig rods are Diawa Steez 7'2H power pitch, 1/2-1oz, and poison adrena 6'11M+. All of these feel more sensitive than a conquest, but that's not an nrx and i've never held one. scott 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted September 20, 2024 Super User Posted September 20, 2024 My expense is mainly fuel and wear and tear. I've got over 6000 miles of towing the boat in 2024 and have several more trips planned until deer season. I buy tackle in bulk so I'm good for a couple of years in that department. 1 Quote

Off topic but I don’t consider NRX JWR the king of bottom contact casting rods. With that said I like several features of NRX rods build components, the short fore grip/ reel lock ring, the cork used and guide train. I don’t like the rod balance, weight and most of all cost of warranty. My fishing partner back in 2010 had a full set of NRX spinning and casting rods at that time the rods price was $500 each and the replacement warranty was another $100 each. My older 90 vintage Lamiglas custom rods that needed to be updated and seriously considered NRX but the extra $100 killed that for me. I contacted Lamiglas to build a new set and was informed they no longer offered custom builds. Lamiglas suggest I contact ALX custom rods he has their new state of the art blanks equal to NRX. Alex at ALX has 3 blanks and built 3 jig and worm rods with 90 day free trail and life time warranty with $35 return cost of shipping. Alex built the rods with everything I wanted for $260 each in 2O12. The ALX rods included the short fore grip with. 1/4” bevel for my middle finger holding the fore grip. Set the 1st guide optimized for the reel I use, little things that make a big difference. The finished rods were 3.8 oz in 2022, NRX were 4.3 oz. and Alex rods perfect balanced. My fishing partner was very impressed with the NRX custom rods and I liked them more then NRX! Check with Alex at ALX rods and ask what he can make today equal to NRX. Tom 2 Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted September 20, 2024 Super User Posted September 20, 2024 It’s all good until that yearly “luxury tax” bill arrived. As for the cost it kinda escapes me, but I will say a bottle of Mend-it has saved me money on soft plastic baits because the fish keep eating the same ones. Bottom line is I feel blessed just to be able to get out on the water and go fish. 3 Quote
