Super User Mobasser Posted September 12, 2024 Super User Posted September 12, 2024 Since I'm still on a regular weight loss plan, my wife has been baking things with Stevia, instead of sugar. So far, she's made oatmeal cookies, and banana walnut muffins. Both taste good, and I can't tell much if any difference in taste, compared to recipes which require sugar. Stevia is derived from a plant, has zero calories, and no sugar. There are all sorts of recipes you can make. You have to make your recipes from scratch, so you can't buy an off the shelf cake or brownie mix, which already has a high sugar content. I think it's a good product, and is safe to use. If your like me, and on a weight loss plan, Stevia may work well for you. You don't have to completely give up all baked goods. Using this product, along with regular exercise, is helping me take off the pounds. My weight started at 230, and is now at 197, which is seven pounds from my target goal of 190. And, like they always say, everything in moderation, especially as we get older. 8 Quote

Super User FryDog62 Posted September 12, 2024 Super User Posted September 12, 2024 I converted from Diet Coke to Zevia soda about 10 years ago. Didn’t lose any weight, but got away from an artificial sweetener in Nutrasweet. 1 Quote
looking45 Posted September 12, 2024 Posted September 12, 2024 My dr and cardiologist both wanted me To lose weight. No special diet. I stayed away from salt and sugar. Stopped the in between meal snacks. I’m drinking Minute Maid No sugar juice. The dr said I could eat normally, just cut back on portions. I’m eating less than half of what I used to eat. I’ve been doing this for a couple of months and now I’m not as hungry or need to eat as much as I did. I started at 248 and this morning I weighed 215. It was hard at first but I got used to it after about a week. No need to spend money on diets or special food. 5 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted September 13, 2024 Super User Posted September 13, 2024 I have had type 2 diabetes for over 10 years and gave up eating as much sugar as I could since then. If just cutting out sugar was all it took, I’d be down to about 12 pounds by now. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 13, 2024 Super User Posted September 13, 2024 Stevia is 300x sweeter then natural sugar however your digestive system can’t dissolve it and it ends damaging your liver unless purged with Omega 3 Fish oils. If you use Stevia or any artificial sweetener double up on fish oil. you want to loose weight cut the carbs down and increase vegetables and exercising. Tom 5 Quote
Susky River Rat Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 I went from over 330lbs to 205-210 depending on the day. I am still trying to get to 200 which I have but, I cannot keep up that cut in calories and exercise I need to stay there. I didn’t go on a special diet I still eat whatever I want. I just eat less. I walk anywhere from 4-10 miles a day between work and my dog. Keep track of my activity and watching my intake have been key. 3 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 13, 2024 Super User Posted September 13, 2024 Congrats on your weight loss. It isn't easy, especially the last few pounds! Keep up the good work! Sugar is carbs. Cutting carbs is the easiest way to cut calories. Reducing calories and increasing exercise is the formula to weight loss. Cutting sugar is just one part of carbs. Don't get me wrong, sugar is the devil. And it's not a bad idea to reduce your intake, but it's only one component of a bigger picture. As a type 1 diabetic, I'm always limiting carb intake, since it costs me insulin. I don't care for stevia. If I want pound cake, I have a sensible portion and cover those carbs with insulin. I stick good old sugar. The stuff is like crack though. 1 Quote

I have to be careful eating sugar in any form. If I eat a brownie, piece of pie or other sweet, I'll feel slow and tired afterwards. So I lay off most sugars, and eat a little bit of things with Stevia. It's not the greatest, but I'm adapting. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 13, 2024 Super User Posted September 13, 2024 If my blood glucose creeps up above 150, I get that logey feeling too. Whenever I eat, I get a spike, but it's up and then back down quickly. It's the drifting high that gets me. Remember, fat and protein slows the carb breakdown to simple sugar and can help you avoid those spikes. That's why things like avocado toast and yogurt are so popular with healthy eaters. They're slowing down the carbs so that exercise can take up that energy rather just storing it in fat tissue. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted September 13, 2024 Global Moderator Posted September 13, 2024 I always eat too much and end up laying on the floor saying “oh dear I’ve eaten too much.” My aunt would always say “yeah but it feels good, doesn’t it” 😂 They grew up hungrier than we did so being full was a blessing Quote

While Stevia has some benefits, if 'the baked goods' your referring to include white flour & butter, you may be pulling on both sides of the rope. Friendly reminder, 'rewarding' yourself with cake & cookies, in any form, is the opposite of a reward and mostly counter productive to your goal. One reason many folks have trouble losing 'those last few pounds of body fat', is that they are unwilling to modify their life style sufficiently to get there. They saw results and expect them to just continue. Sometimes that works, sometimes it does not. What you did worked well, and now you may need to do more. So just do it. Keep it up and Good Luck. Woody B Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 While I'm not speaking specifically of Stevia I believe many artificial sweeteners are just as bad as sugar. "They" design them so the brain recognizes them as sugar.....therefore they taste sweet. Eat or drink something with an artificial sweetener, your brain tells your body "here comes some sugar". Your pancreous releases some insulin to take care of the sugar, but there's no sugar there. This causes your blood glucose level to drop. After repeated times your insulin loses effectiveness, and your body starts to ignore insulin. I believe use, or over use of artificial sweeteners can lead to type 2 diabetes. Both of my Parents, and 3 of my Grandparents had type 2. I'm 60, and luckily I don't. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 13, 2024 Super User Posted September 13, 2024 My pancreas doesn't make insulin. Give me a Coke Zero! I kid. I do love a tiny can of it or my other treat: Barrits zero sugar ginger beer. It's Bahama's favorite! Quote
Super User Koz Posted September 14, 2024 Super User Posted September 14, 2024 If you want to understand more about sugar and sugar substitutes see the articles and videos by Vinny Tortorich. They will change everything for you when it comes to eating. I did great for a few months without sugar, but then it crept back into my life. I’m back to no almost no daily sugar intake and hope to keep it that way. 1 Quote
