possible repair?

i ordered this rod "like new, fully functional and free of defect" from vipoutlet on ebay. needless to say this is what arrived. all has been handled to my satisfaction by the seller but i am curious if this is repairable and if so what products to use. i bought uv 40 epoxy thinking i would just lather the whole area but at this moment im not sure if that is the proper route to take and wanted to appeal to those who might know better. thanks in advance.

 

rod is a st croix rift 6'6" mh conventional jig rod

In general there is no coating you can use to repair, a break needs either internal or external sleeve reinforcement (or both).  The damaged area looks at least a few inches long and I would not even try to fix it.

My thinking is that is more than a scratch on the finish. That looks like there is damage deeper into the rod.  If it were me. I’d bite the bullet and get another rod.

Concur based on review of the photo provided. The area just above the line guide wrapping appears to have damage deeper than the outer layer and into the actual blank fibers.

Under loading this may present a failure point. Just keep that in mind, as a caution, if you intend to use the rod. (wear eye protection)

If you want to try to save it, I’ll fill and smooth the damage with structural epoxy then wrap and finish. It could last a while or forever.
