Jaiden Valick Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 I have a daiwa tatula elite baitcasting reel. I have had it for about three months. About after a month and a half I started to hear some noise. I have taken it apart cleaned it and greased it multiple times (with reel butter grease). I am almost certain it is the pinion and main gear. I can feel it when I am reeling and it is also somewhat loud. The faster I real the more it becomes noticable. I know people say that it is how daiwa reels can be but it wasn't like this new. Does anyone have a fix to quite the noise and make it less grindy feeling? Quote
KeepinItBassy Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 This is bizarre. I own 8 Elites bought from TW and Digitaka. It's been three years and none of them makes noise or had any problems, thus far. It really could be anything. What kind of noise is it making? If it's the pinion and main gear, you'll hear and feel a humming sound from it. I remember I had this issue with three reels. An old SV that was the 8.1:1 speed, another high gear cheap reel and another Daiwa reel which I've done a gear swap on. However, you should not have any sound from it. Another thing is the bearings. You really need to clean out the bearings and lubricate. Just one bad bearing can freak you out. Best thing to do is be very observant on the disassembly. Inspect everything carefully. Clean and reassemble. You can spot imperfections or anything that is faulty with magnification. As anything, You could've got a bad unit upon arrival Quote
Bigbox99 Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 I think that is normal with that platform and why Daiwa is moving away from it and going with the Hyperdrive gears on new reels or sticking to the old gears in the Tatula CT/150/200. I'd get a new set of gears and then butter them up with grease. You can even slow down to a 7:1 if you believe the 8:1 is prone to rapid onset gearyness. Quote

And where would I be able to buy new gears at? I also have looked at the gears and don't see anything wrong with them. Would I be able to notice if they were bad? Quote

I also feel it being consistently "bumpy". Would I be able to see if there is an issue with the gears. I have checked bearings and don't see any problem with them. Quote
LonnieP Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 It’s still under warranty. I’d send it to Daiwa. 1 Quote
ABU is overpriced Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 Issues with cheapo reels are not issues. They're features. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 Putting new gears in that is throwing away money imo. 2 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 8, 2024 Super User Posted September 8, 2024 If it's only three months old I would contact Daiwa. Quote

It could be multiple things. I usually start with three different parts.... Spool Bearings - it's just easy to check AR Bearing - one piece of junk can make it feel off Line Roller Guide - Gunk gets built up on the sides on most of the Tatulas I've seen, even my own. The guide gets out of wack. This would cause the thumping feel. As others have said, I would send it it Daiwa. They do great work. Quote

Yeah if it’s just 3 months, take care of the problem quickly by contacting Daiwa and tell them it’s issues. They are good from what I’ve heard. I know if you contacted Lews, they’ll send you to a mom and pops store for repair or even parts. Hope this isn’t the case. They just aren’t built to super tight tolerances and the basic design lends itself to some sound once broken in. A few weeks in and you’ll be right in the same boat (no pun intended). None of this means in any way that’s it’s not a quality reel. You just have to keep your expectations within reason. The expectations and demands for eternally silent, butter smooth bass reels at mid range prices is largely unrealistic. Of course there are outliers, and I fully expect numerous responses with their own experience with a favorite brand / model. 3 Quote

Yep - My Pfleuger Patriarchs for one - old, but still silent and smooth. Pflueger shot itself in the foot when they discontinued everything but the Monarch (which is a throw-away reel) and the President XT (which isn't bad...but it's no Supreme or Patriarch). Quote

I think that’s a result of being under the same umbrella with multiple other brands. 2 Quote

I’m assuming higher end daiwa reels like the zillion or the steez are built to tighter tolerances? Quote
