Super User Koz Posted September 3, 2024 Super User Posted September 3, 2024 I've never like the color of my Autopilot 120. It's the Photic Camo color, and the only reason I have this color is that when I bought it, it was on sale for $500 off. So now I'm thinking of wrapping my kayak with a carbon fiber look. I've seen videos of other people doing it, and I'm betting it's a bit harder then it looks. So I may price having it done professionally from an auto shop that specializes in wraps. From the videos I have seen, anglers are just wrapping the sides and not the stern, cockpit, or tank well. I wonder how hard it would be to do all of it? Anyway, has anyone else wrapped their kayak or looked into it? Quote
Susky River Rat Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 When I race motocross I’d install new graphics and numbers every year or twice a year. Eventually you get good at it. At first it’s a lot of cussing, heat and windex to get it right. This was on a much smaller scale than a yak would be. It was also lots of bends, rolls and bolt holes to line up. For a whole kit it was $250-300 semi custom. The one thing only you can answer is this really worth it? Remember every time you bump, scrap, slide you can ruin it then. You’ll probably end up wanting to do it every year or every other year to keep it looking good. 3 Quote
JayMac89 Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 I have not wrapped anything. I actually have nothing good to add unfortunately. But I absolutely hate the old town colors. That orange and the blue you see everywhere. I have a forest green or somthing like that. Never seen another old town in the same color as mine. Even when I did research on what yak i wanted, watching YouTube videos. Only saw the blue and orange. I absolutely refused to get the blue or orange. I'm honestly surprised the green isn't more popular. So I guess all I have to add is a nod of approval. Wrap that thing. 1 Quote
Alex from GA Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 I have a friend in Gainesville that does that. If you want his number give me a PM. 1 Quote
Motoboss Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 I priced getting my XJ Jeep done once and it was very expensive, $5-6k for a small SUV. I found for the price it’s very fragile and easily damaged, especially on a kayak. What you saved in buying it on sale you’ll easily spend on the wrap and create a future maintenance project . Weighty considerations…………… 2 Quote

Motoboss Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 Might be well worth the effort. Before and after pics a must. 1 Quote
Super User GaryH Posted September 29, 2024 Super User Posted September 29, 2024 Koz check out Zdecals they are a top shelf boat wrap. They will design and ship to you or take your Yak to them and they’ll wrap it. 2 1 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted October 1, 2024 Super User Posted October 1, 2024 I have a client that is in the wrap business (but not kayaks at least yet). They said to do a quality job takes a skilled person with a lot of experience. I decided I was skilled enough to wrap the PVC rod tubes on my trailer and it was an absolute bee-yotch. I got it done, but if I did anything extensive like a car, boat or kayak with irregular curves, I’d have a professional do it. You may be handier than I, so your results may vary. Let me know how it turns out. I also have never liked Old Town’s colors… although I do like the Ghost camo (sans the orange accents). 1 Quote
TheSwearingAngler Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 I tried doing the roof of my WRX when it was new, researched like crazy, bought all the tools, went through all the prep, removed the antenna which required dropping the headliner(on a car with less than 1000 miles in it) started off okay then it ripped. Right into the trash, antenna back on, headliner back up… I miss the car, but I would never try wrapping again. Also for the record I’m pretty handy and detail oriented. I say learn to live with it or sell it and buy what you want. You could also just cover it in stickers.. a kid just posted a video on YouTube where he emailed a bunch of tackle companies to see if they would give him free stuff and he got a lot of stickers(he got a crazy amount of tackle too) 1 Quote
