I was wondering I'd anyone new what additional customs costs were when ordering a reel from japan?

In terms of buying smaller items like tackle or a reel, there aren't any custom taxes as far as I know.

I've never paid them when I bought numerous reels through Digitaka.

I think Canada is different sadly though.

Have purchased a few reels and a couple rods (individually, not all at once) and never had to pay custom taxes.

Buying reels from Digitaka - the price on the screen is all you pay. No tax, no shipping ("Reels and Rods are free shipping to your country" - from their Q&A), no import fee.

Never cost me over $20 in Canada and that’s orders up to $750 ordering from JLS

Anyone order from Japantackle.com? I like the fact they have a warranty on all reels and will send your JDM daiwa/shimano to daiwa Japan/shimano Japan.

I’ve had good experiences with Japantackle as well as numerous other Dealers in Japan. I’ve got a bunch of JDM reels and never paid a customs tax.

You only pay US Customs import tariff when your total package value is over $800.

Your courier will pay the tariff, deliver your package, and mail you an invoice.

I buy quite a bit from a Japan Broker (shops that don't market to US - 99% of Japan), who stores up to 60 days gratis, packs and ships when you ask.  Masamichi has emailed me to split a shipment into two to dodge tariff.

Jun Sonada and son Kayo at JapanTackle are the finestkind.  Jun has perfect English, Kayo's is passable.  Checked my account - I've placed 25 orders with them, including one reel.

Honestly, you'll often find better reel prices from Asian Portal and Digitaka.  My choice for rods has been FishingShop, kiwi, who discounts rod and lure prices

I’m wondering how much you save going JDM?
I was looking at spinning reels recently. US had them at like 130. JDM but being sold over in US was like 105-110.

Cheaper items don’t have as big a savings as higher priced items, For example a Usdm Zillion is 370 from TW, I paid 235 from Digitaka a few months back.

I’ve been speaking to Jun through emails. He’s been very helpful and his English is great. The fact that they will take your reel and send it to daiwa japan if you have an issue or want it serviced seems like a big plus to me. They also offer a 6 year warranty on all reels bought from them.

I feel like I’d rather spend a few bucks more to get the after support from Japantackle than to save a few bucks and be SOL if I have an issue.

Just my $.02

Hmmmm. The fishing industry must be very different from the firearms industry. The markup on accessories in firearms industry is pretty high.  The firearms themselves not so high in markup.

Yes us canadians get hammered with duty and taxes. That said, its still a cheaper option with a much better selection.

Best idea is to get on all the JDM mailing lists.  I purchased a Vanquish last winter on sale for an additional $100 of the going price.  YMMV
