ThatFishingDad Posted August 30, 2024 Posted August 30, 2024 I am newish to fishing and recently purchased a KVD CC4 rod with a bc reel on FB Marketplace. I have recently fallen in love throwing chatterbaits with trailers, and read that the CC4 rod (made for medium cranking apparently) would be good for a blade jig rod as well. The rod is rated for 1/4-1/2 oz lures; today I went to my local pond, threw on a 3/8 oz chatterbait and a storm largo 3.5in and started casting. I noticed that the rod has a lot of bend to the top of it, like it's being loaded while casting. Am I overreacting or is my lure combo too heavy for the rod? I couldn't find what the actual plastic weighs unfortunately Thanks for any insight 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted August 30, 2024 Super User Posted August 30, 2024 Most rods have a sweet spot around middle of the ratings. Go way light and rod probably won't load up to cast adequately....too heavy and you get that pronounced bend, and maybe even an unforgettable 'CRACK'! 1/4-1/2 sounds like a really small window. Not familiar with that rod, but if that's correct, there may be some slop available to you. 3/8 should be fine, with or without plastic added Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 30, 2024 Super User Posted August 30, 2024 1/4-1/2 oz. is the range for all my Medium power Falcon rods. I am not familiar with that rod. Some rods fish light. Some fish heavy. I'm going to guess that combination of lure and trailer will weigh around 5/8 oz. Then you have to consider lure resistance on retrieve. An unweighted 3/8 oz. worm has near zero resistance. A 3/8 oz. chatterbait considerably more. Like Choporoz said, middle lure weight is often the best. I'd prefer a heavier power rod for that combination. Which is why I have more MH rods than any other power. I fish a lot of 3/8 oz. and 1/2 oz. baits. Spinnerbaits weigh more than their listing. Some a lot more. And this is before adding a trailer. Quote

Add in the hook, snap, blade and skirt and it's probably close to if not over that 1/2oz...add in that plastic and as 'BC' says, you're at 5/8oz or even more. 3/8oz chatters I toss on my Aird-X MH/F (1/4-1oz ). 3 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted August 30, 2024 Super User Posted August 30, 2024 1/4 to 1/2 oz identifies this rod taper as Para - most of the flex will be in the mid and deeper - -the tip itself will be fast. The nice thing about this, it should cast its rated range farther than many other rods of the same length. 1 Quote
ThatFishingDad Posted August 30, 2024 Author Posted August 30, 2024 So the rod is the Lew's KVD Composite; Below is the stats on it I guess my question is, should I just buy a different rod if I plan on throwing 3/8oz chatterbaits with trailers, or am I alright to use this rod for what I'm throwing? I'm about to pull the trigger on a Ark B-Hittay rod and just sell this rod if it may damage the rod throwing this size bait on there (it's meant for crankbaits it seems), and considering I got the reel and rod for under $120, I wouldn't mind doing that lol Quote
Bigbox99 Posted August 30, 2024 Posted August 30, 2024 A 3/8 oz chatterbait plus trailer is over a 1/2 oz. If you want a budget chatterbait rod then go to Walmart and get the 7' MH Lightning Rod. At 1/2 oz to 1 oz its slightly underrated and can throw up to 1.25 oz easily. Quote

Pretty sure I still have 7 of them if that tells you anything. It was my GO TO Jackhammer rod for both the 3/8 & 1/2 oz baits, as well as 1/2 & 3/4 oz spinnerbaits. I used 15 lb FC exclusively. If you like composite and that EVA grip, you'll be very happy with how that stick performs. Those rods accounted for more trophy smallies for me than all my other rods combined; including my PB. I have never fished the Lews model. https://youtu.be/frJAlndpO7E?feature=shared https://youtu.be/o9xew3tWuuU?feature=shared&t=1012 Good Luck A-Jay 2 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 30, 2024 Super User Posted August 30, 2024 I'm glad A-Jay responded. It's been posted elsewhere about a MH rod listed at 1/8-3/8 oz. I replied in the thread about a MH casting rod I have with a lure rating of 3/16-3/8 oz. This is ML range for me. I contacted iRod and they assured me the rod did in fact handle MH weights. Therefore I have to assume the weight range was only for the lead. Looks like the KVD listing is like my iRod listing. 1 Quote

I didn't want to take any chances and after looking around the forum and more reading, the tharp b-hittay rod seems to be exactly what I'm looking for, so I placed an order today. I'll probably keep the KVD rod just for crankbaits since most if not all of my crankbaits are within that range. The least thing I want to do is damage a rod, rather sell it off or use it for other techniques. Quote

Another reviewer that tested several of the Tharp series rods said the B-Hittay was his favorite even tho he admitted to being primarily a jig fisherman. First thing you will notice is how large the diameter is in front of the handle. However, the tip has a fairly small diameter. Definitely a Medium-Fast action. Not light at 6.3 oz. but I feel that is kind of light for what the rod is. Supposedly pretty versatile. Although I haven't been out much the past 5 years, I continued to buy the occasional rod and reel. If I took the B-Hittay out, it wasn't more than once. I have several rods and reels that haven't been used yet. Another review of the rod wouldn't hurt. Give us you impressions of it after some use. 1 Quote

Will definitely be posting a newbie review on it haha; by the way, who is TT? I'd like to read the review on the rod Quote
