Rockhopper Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 Anyone else? It is probably the only thing I love to do more than bass fish. 9 days until opening morning and I will be gone in the woods for a week and a half without reception. 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted August 28, 2024 Super User Posted August 28, 2024 No elk here but let us know how the hunt goes. 1 Quote
Rockhopper Posted August 28, 2024 Author Posted August 28, 2024 I typically do well. I am blessed to live in an area that is a mecca for Roosevelts. But I will definitely report back! 1 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted August 29, 2024 Global Moderator Posted August 29, 2024 Michigan has elk in the northern lower peninsula and big ones too, but it’s a lottery draw. I’ve seen penned elk before but never any in the wild and I’ve never heard one bugle. I did one time see two massive bulls (in a pen) sparring and that was a site to see. An elk hunt is on my bucket list. Preferably out west. Good luck and make sure to report back. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted August 29, 2024 Global Moderator Posted August 29, 2024 You could throw a spear and kill one around here. I took the middle photo from a ladder rack on top of a truck, thing scared me to death 3 Quote
Super User gim Posted August 29, 2024 Super User Posted August 29, 2024 @TnRiver46 do they have an elk hunting season by you in Tennessee? Never new there was a population of elk there. When I think of elk, I think of the western portion of the country. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted August 29, 2024 Global Moderator Posted August 29, 2024 @gimruis, seems like they had a tag lottery for an extremely limited amount of kills a few years back , not sure if it still goes on. They are historically native to the area, were gone for a long time, and were reintroduced around the year 2000(ish) I think. Several in the Great smoky mtns national park had radio tracking collars on and weren’t the least bit frightened by people, they would walk straight up to you if I had to guess, they were thriving back when the native Americans used to burn the vegetation. Then when Europeans suppressed all fires the habitat became thick woods not as suitable for grazing 1 Quote

Functional Posted September 4, 2024 Posted September 4, 2024 NC and VA have been cultivating a herd on the western mountain ranges. VA just opened up a lottery system saying the herd reached great enough numbers they can support a few tags. NC still hasnt done the same. I imagine the western mountains of TN share the same herds since all 3 states touch the same mountain range. Archery Elk is on my bucket list, due for a major surgery in the next 1-3 years and after that I'm going to make it a priority. 1 Quote

Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted September 6, 2024 Global Moderator Posted September 6, 2024 It’s supposed to get down to 40 degrees where I’m staying in the smokies this weekend, full of elk but I doubt there’s a a season even if there was a season you’d have to be related to a politician to get a tag 1 Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 There is an elk population here in Nebraska. Rancher where I Mule Deer hunt absolutely hates the Elk. Apparently herd gets to running and will wipe out a section of fence 30-80 yards wide...rancher puts fence back up...elk ruin it again next day. He keeps telling me to get a tag...will put me on them... It's a draw tag, and pretty tough to get. I keep trying. Good luck @Rockhopper!!! 1 Quote
