I was looking at purchasing a G. Loomis Bronzeback rod. I don't know if I would be better with the Bronzeback or an IMX. I have 2 GLX rods and need one more rod for smallies. What is the prevailing opinion?

While I have the feeling this will get moved to another forum....

Ill answer anyway...

Last feb. I bought the SMR882-S, its 7'4" fast taper and medium action, but yet its rated for 1/8 oz. baits. Beleive me it will fish a bait that small, and well at that, but on top of fishing the small jig n eel rigs I have come to love, I also spent mos tof my summer throwing 1/2 oz. football jigs with DT GYCB Hula Grubs down 15-30' ledges, and this rod performed wonderfully there. I spooled my Lew's Gold Spin with 8 lb. original clear Stren and fished all summer with this rod never going in the rod box. I LOVE THIS ROD!

That being said, my dad has the PR844S IMX which is similar to the BB rod I have, but in my hands I prefer the BB rod, it just has a better feel to me. Its hard for me to explain, but this rod feels like part of my arm when I fish with it, and my dad IMX 844s just seemed like another Lomis to me...

Take that for what its worth....its just my opinion...

** Note **

The smallmouth section is new so we are being flexible with that Forum. This could have been put in that section, but this is the CORRECT Forum for rods.

My partner has two Bronzeback which I have fished. He loves them, but I think the tips are too soft for anything except live bait. This series was created to fill a "specialty rod" niche. I don't find them to be very special. Of course, now there are a dozen models in the serires and you may find one you like very much.

My "smallmouth rod" is the GLX PR844S. It is my favorite rod, period. Although the #4 blank generally implies Heavy Power, in this series the taper and tip is significantly different than the MBR, for example. This is a Medium Power/ Fast action "popping rod" designed for light saltwater fishing, both live bait and lures. Small fish under 5 lbs are still fun to catch, but when you need power, this rod loads up and can handle almost anything in fresh water.

Casting distance is another tremendous attribute of the rod. If you are using the approriate weight in your lure selection, this equipment achieves maximum distance. Oddly, this is also the case when fishing live minnows on a split shot rig.

Downside:

This is NOT my main rod for heavier soft plastics, the tip is too soft for my taste. For 6" & 7"Senkos, El Gordo tubes and jigs over 3/8 oz, I prefer a firm tip. For those applications I fish a St.Croix Legend Elite ES70MF.

BTW,

Although I am NOT getting any Bronzeback rods, my partner just purchased the GLX PR844S if that means anything. These rods match up pretty well with the Shimano Stella 2500FB, too!

Thanks for the info. It will not be a bronzeback in my rod locker! It looks like an IMX or another GLX.

I purchased a SMR753S-SP Bronzeback early last year and so far it has been a very good rod.  It has one of the best reel seats of any rod I have ever used, it is very sensitive and yes, the tip is soft.  After fishing this rod all last year, I found that it excells with mid to deep water crank baits and heavier plastic such as Ika's and weighted Senko like baits but it is not the rod for top water, finesse, or shallow cranks.  It has a very powerful backbone for deepwater hooksets.  I have pulled small 1-2lb bass totally apart when setting the hook in shallow water.

Make no mistake, this is a technique specific rod.  But once you figure out that it is different and how best to fish it, it is a very powerful, fun rod.  I would highly recommend it.

But as far as the rest of the line of Bronzebacks, I was not impressed with the casting rods.  I think the GLX and the IMX casting rods are the way to go.  If I had to choose another rod in the line, I like the SMR822S-SP-GLX or the SMR811S-SP (I have used this rod and it is great for lizards, small beavers and creature baits).

One more thing about my rod, I thought at first I would not like the length (just a little bit short) but after catching several fish, it doesn't seem to be a big deal.

I have the 7'7" spinning rod and love it. It's a great rod if anyone is looking for a good spinning rod. You can cast a light weight lure a mile. Love mine so much I use it in saltwater for flats fishing.
