MarVaBC Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Anyone use/have used this rod? I'm thinking about getting one and would appreciate any input. Also what model would you recommend (i was thinking a 7' medium). I will mainly be fishing lakes using deep crankbaits. The rod is $50 and feels pretty good, just want to get opinions before I get one. Thanks... Quote
Live.2.Fish Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I was in the same situation about a week ago. I was looking at the crankin sticks. But, I would recommend that you seriously take a look at the Rick Clunn Signature series rods. They feel so much better and lighter than the crankin stick and are on sale right now for only $59! If you have a chance to feel both in the store, IMO there is no comparison between the two. They have a 7' "crankbait" rod that is MH which might be better for your situation since you are looking to throw mainly deep cranks, but I bought a 6'6" M "drop shot/worm" for my crankbaits (I mostly throw mid to shallow divers). It seems to have about a moderate action for the tip (It doesn't exactly come out and say it). If you are looking for a M then I'd go with the 7' M "drop shot/worm". NJBass44 Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I have the 6"6" crankin stick and I think its a great rod for the money. Its a composite so it has enough give to fish crankbaits but is also sensitive enough to feel grass, etc. Its not a bad topwater rod either. I was going to buy another one a few weeks ago when they had them on sale for $40. I would def. go with the 7' for the deeper cranking as well. Quote
ga_hawghauler Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 I have a crankin stick From bps i love the sensitivity that tehse rods have and for the price its hard to beat. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted January 20, 2007 Super User Posted January 20, 2007 I've got 3 crankin sticks. I love the feel of them. If you're throwin deep crankers you might want to bump the action up to MH, a Med action may load up too much. Quote
bitman Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 Ive got a 6 footer pistol grip crankin stick for throwing shallow runners at the bank and its awesome, great rod for 50 bucks, if you wanna spend 80 bucks the Fritts cranking stick by American Rodsmiths is awesome too, thats what I throw my deep runners on and I love it. The_Natural Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 More expensive crankbait rods like the Loomis CBR's will be lighter and offer you more feel of what your bait is doing, but as long as it is a moderate-fast rod; your fish should stay buttoned. Quote
bassdocktor Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 I've had the BPS crakin stick for 2 years and it has been great. I've got the 7ft MH and it's perfect for throw deep divers. Nice light rod can't complain especially when they go on sale. bassdocktor Quote
fishbowl807 Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 I have a 7ft M crankin stick for deeper crankbaits and I like it. IMO you can't go wrong wtih it for under $50 bucks Quote
Super User Munkin Posted January 20, 2007 Super User Posted January 20, 2007 I sold mine because I could not deal with the "power hump". Allen Quote
castaway Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 I have 2 a 7' Medium and a 7' MH.They have been outstanding rods for the money, I can't remember how long I have had them several years now,no complaints from them. :)Ivan Quote
mdangler Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 I sold mine because I could not deal with the "power hump". Allen Come on Munkin. I for one dont know why people dont like the power hump. I love it. Like it was said before, lamiglass and american rodsmiths make the highest quality composite, the crankin stick is an awsome rod for the money. I have two a 6'6 m and a 7' mh. I love them. Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted January 22, 2007 Super User Posted January 22, 2007 I have a 7' med Crankin Stick and it has served me well. You can't find a better rod for the price. Personally, I like the power hump, but I have larger hands. Falcon Quote
MarVaBC Posted January 22, 2007 Author Posted January 22, 2007 Good stuff! Glad to hear the recommendations. As far as the power hump goes, I don't really mind it....but you could always sand it down if you prefer a thinner diameter. I like the feel of the 7' med better than the 7' MH....the MH feels way too stiff, just my preference, I like a little more "whip" to them. Thanks again for the info! Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted January 23, 2007 Super User Posted January 23, 2007 Count me in as a cranking stick fan. I have 2 (soon to be 3) One is a 7 M, with a BPS Extreme reel, 5.4:1, for divers, one 6'6" M with a 6.4:1 Extreme for Rat-L-Traps, and subsurface cranks (like the baby1-) And will soon be getting a 6' M with another Extreme, not sure which one yet maybe the 7.1:1 for jerkbaits/topwaters. Right now I use the 6'6" for jerks, but I would like a shorter rod for that so I can move less line with a sweep, and perhaps the faster reel to take the slack up. Quote
MarVaBC Posted January 23, 2007 Author Posted January 23, 2007 Lol ww2farmer....I just picked up the 5.4:1 Extreme the other day while they were on sale at bass pro to go with my future cranking rod. Still deciding between the crankin stick or the rick clunn model. The clunn is on sale for $59 and has a sweet feel to it. Either one will do the trick though...the reel feels nice as well...should make for a pretty good crankbait/spinnerbait setup! Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted January 24, 2007 Super User Posted January 24, 2007 Thanks for all the input on the cranking stick.I will pick one up for sure. I was looking at the Fenwick Eagle GT but, it sounds like everyone likes the BPS stick. ;D I will take alook at the Clunn rods too. Who knows maybe they will go on sale for BPS Spring Classic? Quote
