Super User geo g Posted August 19, 2024 Super User Posted August 19, 2024 I will skip a plastic under a dock or under tree branches. But I am not good at it, and it's hit or miss whether I end up with a mess. It is something you have to practice to be any good at it, and I don't ever do it unless I feel the NEED FOR SPEED. It happen so seldom I just never developed the trust. I have had some big time bird nests when doing it. I guess that is what I'm really good at! 1 Quote
Super User Koz Posted August 19, 2024 Super User Posted August 19, 2024 I skip just about every bait in my arsenal using any of my bait casters. I do have a shallow spool Lew’s pitching and skipping reel but I really haven’t used it much. Since I have a dock in my backyard I had a place to practice when learning. It was a little trickier learning to skip while sitting in my kayak. Positioning is key. Spot lock jog helps me with that. But there’s one bait I need to try skipping that I have not practiced yet - a buzzbait. But I will need to find the right trailer to make that happen, probably a toad. Normally I throw buzzbaits without a trailer. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 20, 2024 Super User Posted August 20, 2024 The majority of my skipping is around trees, brush, reeds, & lilies that grow above the water. My favorite is pre-spawn Buck Brush with a Jig-n-Craw. Most anglers flip-n-pitch the outside edge of the brush but if you want Nadine ya gonna have to skip between the individual brush. 2 Quote
GRiver Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 I skip with a 6’6” med/ fast rod with a spinning reel, I can’t skip a bait caster with out it poofing up on me. I mostly use with a wacky rigged, senko style baits, or creature bait around docks. 1 Quote

VTFan Posted August 20, 2024 Author Posted August 20, 2024 What little success I've had with skipping has been with a 6' 6" medium rod with a spinning reel throwing wacky's and frogs. Even then it's hit and miss. Baitcaster is out of the question, made me want to lose my religion LOL!!! Practiced one day on a concrete floor and did fine with both spinning and baitcaster but not so on the water. Guess I just need to practice practice practice. 1 Quote
KP Duty Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 I usually do an underhand skip. Just prepare to pitch, but instead of starting with your bait even with your palm, lower it to your wrist. This will pit your bait on the surface and produce an underhand skip 1 1 Quote
