fishhugger Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 for some bizarre reason, i've been watching youtube videos on pipe smoking. my dad's generation - many smoked cigars, pipes, and of course, ciggies. we're talking 1950's. but now, cigars are mildly in, sort of, ciggies are looked down on, and i never run across an actual pipe smoker. are they all hiding? and what is the pleasure in it? here's some old guy who apparently indulged... am i pretty dumb to be looking into a habit involving tobacco...... it's supposed to be very relaxing, or so the youtubers say, and a wonderful experience. i wouldn't be interested in cigarettes due to negative health effects. but, pipe smoking seems different, i guess less habit forming..... 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted August 18, 2024 Super User Posted August 18, 2024 I have smoked cigars for decades. About 10 years ago I tried hard to get into pipes. I bought many pipes and a lot of different tobacco, and various tools and accessories. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but they compared unfavorably to cigars, for me. I think if I had started with a pipe, maybe I'd have stuck with that and likely saved myself many thousands of dollars. My son started out with a pipe in college and still prefers it to cigars. All I can suggest is to try it. Cost is minimal to try it, really. Quote
padlin Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 Past tense here too. I got into it a long time ago, I enjoyed the taste of top shelf cherry, not the cheap stuff at the grocery store. Both the wife and I liked the cherry smell. Got into carving my own for a while. Don’t recall why I stopped, may have just been the middle road between cigarettes and cold turkey. Like I said, it’s been a long time. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted August 18, 2024 Global Moderator Posted August 18, 2024 Used to , I’ve got enough cancer in my bloodline without tobacco so I quit. It was a nice way to end the work day when I lived in an old log cabin proper English was my favorite blend 6 Quote
fishhugger Posted August 18, 2024 Author Posted August 18, 2024 @TnRiver46 yup.... glad ya quit, w cancer lurking around in general... cute cabin. @Choporoz yes... i wondered, i guess, if pipes would be cheaper than cigars. i guess you have an outlay for the 'equipment' (pipe), but the tobacco is just tobacco. a cigar there'd be more steps in the making of one, esp a good one, and you'd pay for that each time. i guess i need to relax, and maybe i'll try pipes... i love the smell of coffee.... can't drink that due to caffeine.... whiskey, i can indulge in that.... but a pipe.......the smell of really good tobacco would be appealing...... hmmm.......... seems like pipe smokers sort of like the ritual and all of a nice smoke occasionally........ 1 Quote
Bazoo Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 The preacher of the church I go to smokes. I asked him if he was planning on going to heaven. He said yes, to which I replied "So you decided to do your smoking in this life?" I don't like the negative associated with cigarettes. Partly because my mom was addicted to them. Once she chose to buy cigarettes instead of paying the electric bill. I didn't know until they cut the electric off. I had to pay an extra fee to have it turned back on. She also died of cancer - 5 types in total. Pipes do have an interesting feel associated with them, and I too think they don't have the negative connotation that cigarettes do. I have considered it myself. I know a classy old gent that smokes a pipe. And I guess thats how I sum up pipes, classy. I do like the smell. Both cherry and vanilla. Quote
Timpson Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 My now wife bought me a pipe years ago when we were dating I smoked it back then. I bought some tobacco a while ago to try again and still haven't . 1 Quote

Woody B Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 I love the smell of a pipe. My Grandfather (my Moms Dad) smoked a pipe. Most of my generation, at least around here are or were smokers. My other Grandfather (Dad's Dad) made it impossible for me to smoke. When I was 12 I had spent the night at his house, with one of my cousins. We got one of his cigarettes and got caught smoking it behind his building. He made us sit down and smoke a whole pack. (Pall Mall's with no filters). Smoking anything make me fell like I'm going to throw up. I would have probably have been a cigarette smoker had this not happened. I suspect this saved me a bunch of money, as well as some possible health problems. Quote
padlin Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Those Pall Mall’s would run you $17.74 a pack here in Massachusetts. Quote

Tried a cigar once, and a cigarette when I was younger. Thought they both tasted like dirt and obviously never had the desire to try again knowing the taste, cost, and health problems that were associated with it. 1 Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Parents, grand parents, aunts and uncles all smoked cigarettes'...could not stand the smell. Never tried. Almost all of my friends growing up chewed. Never got in to that either. Probably a good thing...Grandma died of oral cancer in her mid 70's, and lung cancer was the cause of my Mom's death at age 71. Grandpa on my Dad's side had three heart attacks by the time he was 55 years old...I'm 56 and pretty healthy. I want to leave this world as my Grandpa did...at 83 years old, he and Grandma had a little "afternoon delight"....he rolled over went to sleep, and passed peacefully. Now that's the way to go!! 4 1 Quote
Functional Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 My uncles always went out back and smoked a cigar after dinner, so naturally I tried cigars with them. I found I could only enjoy them while drinking whiskey but that compounded the splitting headache I had an terrible sleep those nights. Never smoked, never saw the appeal and I always had hobbies that kept me broke to afford much else. At a previous job a guy used to take his lunch at the same time I did and I'd wait for him to fire up his pipe. Hed smoke his pipe and take a walk around the city. It smelt so good I'd just follow him for about 15-20 minutes then pick a spot to eat wherever I wound up following him. No idea if he ever knew I did that. Still miss that smell. 2 Quote

volzfan59 Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 I occasionally smoke a pipe or a good cigar, three or four times a year. Don't inhale, not addicted , can take it or leave it. Usually outside sitting around the fire in spring and fall with some good scotch. Why? I enjoy it, love the smell of pipe tobacco or a good cigar. 1 Quote
