Hello Forum, it's been awhile since I have posted or asked a question. I've taken a long break from fishing because of personal life reasons. Recently I have been getting back into fishing, maybe once a week.

I have a bunch of Expride A rods. Particularly, I was fishing the 7'2 MH and and 7'2 H both combo'ed with reels spooled with 40lb braid tied to a 12lb fluoro leader. I cannot remember if I used to use straight fluoro for these rods, but my knot kept catching the guides on both setups. I used the FG knot. I retied several times. Checked the knots throughout the session. Made sure I clipped off any excess lines at the knot and even took a lighter to it. I even tied on a longer leader so mitigate the knot catching on casts. But on retrieve, the knot would almost always catch a guide. Guides are straight, I should mention.

Are these rods no good for knot to leader? I don't believe the Expride A's are considered micro guides...

Any tips, tricks, and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How long of a leader are you running? I don’t have any exprides but I have size 5 guides on both of my casting rods with 30lb braid to 12lb floro with no issues using a ~6’ leader

I typically run about a 6-10ft leader. I don't really measure. Sometimes, I run a longer leader depending on body of water.

Hmm, interesting. There aren't any nicks in any of the guide inserts that the knot/line could be catching on, is there?

I have the 7's MH Expride A and always run braid to leader with no issues. I use the Alberto Knot for connecting my leaders.

I'm braid to leader too, I don't notice it nearly as often with .28mm braid to .33mm leader and never with .21mm braid to .26mm leader.  Anything heavier and there is a click or hitch most of the time.

I also use an expride A 7’2” mh with braid to leader. 50lb pp super slick with a 6’ 15# CXX leader with no problems

While the fg knot is very small diameter it is rather long and stiff, my rods are mostly micro guides and the fg knot catches on the guides pretty bad especially the tip top.  One rod I changed the tip guide to a larger diameter and that helped.

Instead of the fg knot, I tie back to back nail knots, similar if not the same as back to back uni knot.  Slightly larger diameter but much shorter and more compact.  I leave it long enough to go on the reel and have no issues with the knot catching on the cast.
