txchaser Posted August 16, 2024 Posted August 16, 2024 Conquest MBR Tip snapped - Is this a known issue? Happened to me twice - pick the rod up, grab the line, tug it a bit to make sure it is clear so I can tie on, and the tip just falls off. Probably the top 6" once and the top 8" the second time. I don't leave it anywhere that part of the rod would be in contact with anything, or stepped on. 20+ rods, plenty of really nice ones, so I don't think it's abuse. It's my only loomis conquest though. Maybe this needs a different behavior from me? I really don't think I'm bending the tip 180, I'm usually really careful about going beyond 90 degrees; I've even yelled at fishing buddies about high-sticking. Thoughts? Quote
Bigbox99 Posted August 16, 2024 Posted August 16, 2024 Don't do that. Also why are you doing that? How does this "make sure its clear to tie on"? 2 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted August 16, 2024 Super User Posted August 16, 2024 90° seems extreme to me. 2 Quote
thunderblack Posted August 16, 2024 Posted August 16, 2024 That pretty odd. I would be doing the warranty process for the rod and just be a little extra careful with the next one. I feel like Loomis rods to not have a reputation for being brittle or snapping tips like that. Also very hard to tell how rods are handled and shipped before you buy them and fish. Some places do not tape the rod to one end of the tube when shipping ect... 1 Quote
HawkeyeSmallie Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 No offense but you might need a refresher course on geometry. Specifically angles. 1 Quote
Super User islandbass Posted August 18, 2024 Super User Posted August 18, 2024 I am not sure why you believe have to pull line down like that. If I am interpreting what you described correctly, in effect, you’re “high sticking” the rod. High sticking a rod is one of best ways to break a rod. That is a big no-no on any rod. With that said, I could be misinterpreting what you described, but I am still curious as to what you’re trying to ensure is “clear”? Perhaps to see if you missed a guide or if the line might be tangled around the rod. If that is the case, then all you need is a visual inspection, which is what I do if a remember to do that and it is better because doing this does not involve bending the rod. The mystery is afoot. 🕵️ 3 Quote
txchaser Posted August 28, 2024 Author Posted August 28, 2024 Thanks everyone. The tug is just to make sure it's not wrapped funny, missed guide, etc. But it's like a six inch tug, not a yank or anything. It's like it just fell apart? Anyway I sent it back and they warranteed it without making a fuss or charging me xpeditor, so maybe there was some kind of issue they saw in the break. The more I think about the first time it happened I bet I had less than 1/2 of pressure on it, so it must have already been broken. Your comments about they are not known for fragile tips is very helpful, since I haven't broken any poison adrenas or kistler zbone/helium treating them the same way, I thought maybe these are fragile. I'll probably baby it anyway! 1 Quote

If you are going to do the ol tip tug then stand with hands spread out and hold the rod in one and tug with the other with arms nearly fully extended from your sides or as close to fully extend as possible. The closer the hand holding the rod and one doing the tug get the more likely you are to bust off a tip. This should really only be used to get an idea how the rod loads if you are curious. To "make sure it's clear to tie on" you shouldn't have to do any of this and just use your eyeballs to inspect the guides or find out when the bait won't fall when the thumb bar is pressed assuming you don't run a ton of spool tension. 1 Quote
Super User islandbass Posted August 28, 2024 Super User Posted August 28, 2024 @txchaser: for all we know, it could have been damaged (e.g., someone could have man handled it and damaged it) before you bought it. Glad they’re helping you. 😎 2 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted August 28, 2024 Super User Posted August 28, 2024 Nite-lite winter dock fishing, I watched both my buddy and his wife do the strangest thing to their Major Craft solid-glass-tip XUL rockfish rod. Fishing weightless float rig with 4' dropper in the deep channel, in the excitement of landing fish, both of them would crank their reel to where the solid tip was doubled-over, and the tip-top and first guide were touching. They did this over and over. After 2 winters of this, the tip finally shattered. We went over don't do that, and he upgraded the moderate-cost rockfish with Yamaga Blanks - Really Don't Do That. 1 1 Quote
