I had a decent  day Tuesday on a 150 acre lake. Caught around 25 bass on buzzbaits and worm. Biggest about three lbs. I talked with guy at the ramp who he said he caught two six lbers and a five. I didnt press him for info but when he left he threw his trash out in a dumpster. So I checked it out and there were six  seven inch purple Rage Tail worms in his trash bag. They appeared  to only catch one bass each, were barely torn up and skin hooked on the side. Well at least I know the bait he was using . I kept them, cut a half inch off the tip. I'll use them next time .

I think it should be more appropriately titled "dumpster diving for worms."

Hopefully this dumpster dive will put me on bigger bass.

If the worms were torn up they may indicate you found something that is working.

Keep in mind your 3 lber was probably 6 lbs in mind of the other angler.

How can you not respect a move like this, just shows the lengths Bassheads will go to 🤣

I never throw away my used plastics, save them for a kid for likes to melt them down and pour his own.   That ain't working on me, but then again I'm not setting the world on fire 😁

Believe none of what you hear, and 1/2 of what you see...

I used to fish with a guy would always "one-up" any other fishermen when talking about their day...."oh, you caught a 4 lb bass...well...I landed a 5 lb bass."

I do like your dumpster dive! But if I was catching fish on a lure, I would never throw it away...even the bits and parts...I'd keep them as reference and reminder to get more  : )

Kudos to you @scaleface, when are ya heading back out?

You have to give us a report on if the worms work for ya

Heck I'm the guy who bends a hook out in some rock and then bends the hook back into shape with pliers and resharpens the hook and keeps fishing the bait for another 3 months - I applaud your resourcefulness!  To some guys the bait I fished and caught with for 3 months was trash the minute I bent the hook out.

I recently caught a 5 lber on a speed worm - worm ripped and I bit the head off and re rigged it and made another cast and caught a 7 lber on the same worm with a flat ugly head.

Guess bass really don't care!

I dont think its the worm as much as the location .  There are hidden brushpiles out there  and these lake regulars know where they are. I have found a few.

This kinda reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when Kramer goes dumpster diving for items discarded by the Merv Griffin Show and then sets that crap up in his apartment. :lol-045:

You're a scrapper! I'm guessing you can build a bass boat out of kite string, a six-pack of Yoo-Hoo's, and a barrel of acorns.

He was baiting you scaleface. Those worms have been riding around in his boat for months.😁

When I hear dock talk of a bass 5 or more lbs, my question is what brand scale do you have.

I found a lot of good stuff in dumpsters at the lake.  Lots of rods and reels.  A few lures.  I think there's a certain percentage of the population that if they don't catch anything, they get so mad, they throw out their gear.  It's usually not nice gear.  But it's often working gear, or gear that just needs a tiny amount of work to repair.  And it's good for giving away to friends or that annual trade in at BPS.  And it's always nice to have a few extra Zebco 33's in case you decide to take someone fishing who's never been before.

I'll usually give the dumpster a quick glance when I pass by.  To date, my best find was a Fenwick Eagle rod with a Penn Warfare reel.  The spool release lever was bent and wouldn't flip, but a pair of pliers fixed that.  It's more of a catfish/saltwater setup, so I never really use it, other than to flip braided fishing line around (using three reels, two of which are empty).

Well, actually that was my second greatest find.  I did find a bass boat once (beside the dumpster).  But it didn't have a trailer or motor (did have an old trolling motor though).  It sat there for a month before it finally disappeared.  The previous owner of that boat must have had some SERIOUS anger management issues!

Maybe but I dont think so. He was telling me the history of the lake ,  the dozer piles that use to be there and other info. He was knowledgeable and my B.S. meter wasnt going off.

I have some dignity but free fishing gear is free fishing gear.

I guess this is another proof that we will do anything to catch them.

Good job doing the detective work in the dumpster. The other thing I do especially if its a new body of water I'm less familiar with - is to put the first fish or two in the live well and see what they barf up. Helps determine if they are keying on crayfish, minnows, etc. and a lot of times clues as to color.

I've not been to lakes with dumpsters, but great tip, thanks. I am a dumpster diver... and I admit it.

Heck I even give a quick glance in the garbage cans beside gas pumps, since I once found a good extension cord in one.

One of my Master Degrees is in pinning worms together with a hook.

I've been known to meander over by a guides boat when they're pulling up after a trip.
