Super User ChrisD46 Posted August 14, 2024 Super User Posted August 14, 2024 You may decide for yourself if you prefer the newer "PR Knot" better than the FG knot - However , I do believe it is worth taking a serious look at (provided you have the right assembly tools featured in the knot video) : 1 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted August 14, 2024 Super User Posted August 14, 2024 Interesting. But I'm not willing to spend money on a tool just to tie a knot. Though I hope someone else is, because that kid needs a new pair of jeans! 2 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted August 14, 2024 Super User Posted August 14, 2024 I still like my Allbright knots, and we go back 40 years. 3 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted August 14, 2024 Super User Posted August 14, 2024 Cool but not for me. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted August 14, 2024 Super User Posted August 14, 2024 No doubt, like the FG, an incredibly strong knot. But I’ve found when you tie off with hitch knots, that area of the knot is just as thick as an Alberto which is easier to tie and I’ve never had a knot strength issue. 6 Quote
Fishingmickey Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 I know what FG stands for. I am staying with FG for braid to leader. FM Quote
LionHeart Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 This sent me to the YouTube rabbit hole of knot strength videos. I think it is safe to say the PR has a higher strength most of the time, but not by much. I have become so comfortable with the FG, that I'm not interested in switching for an extra lb. or so of strength most/some of the time. Which is a relief because if it were appreciably better, I'd be having to tie that crazy knot on nearly every setup I own. Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 What the PR does better than the FG is retain strength for low test lines 10lb and under. The lighter the line, the bigger the advantage, but the opposite is true as well. IMO, its really not necessary unless you're trying to get as deep as possible with light line and micro guides. I've tied a few of them, but personally, I cant justify the extra effort because the Alberto works so well and is incredibly simple to tie. Other than the complicated nature of the PR, I don't have a ton of confidence in it, because my use has been limited in comparison to other connection knots. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted August 15, 2024 Super User Posted August 15, 2024 @bulldog1935: I’ve been a fan of the Albright knot since the day I finally had to learn a knot to join two lines. It’s easy to tie and has never failed me. In addition so many people recommend all the other line joining knots out there, especially here, to the point I thought I might be able list on one hand the number of members that use it like me. One of the best things I like about it is a large difference in line diameters is not an issue with the Albright knot. 1 Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted August 15, 2024 Author Super User Posted August 15, 2024 I'm still old fashion preferring the Crazy Alberto and Double Uni Knot with braid to FC leader set ups . Quote
Super User king fisher Posted August 15, 2024 Super User Posted August 15, 2024 I have tried the PR knot. It can be tied without a tool, many videos showing how. It is easier to learn, and faster to tie than the FG, strength is and size are the same as the FG. I don't use the FG or the PR knot when bass fishing. I use them often for leaders when fishing in salt water. The Alberto is my go to knot for braid to leader on my bass fishing gear. It is a little bigger and not as strong as an FG, or PR but works fine for me. Uni to Uni is what I used for years, and is a strong easy to tie knot, but I like the smaller size of the Alberto. The Albright is a great knot, but the Alberto is so similar, just as fast to tie and in my opinion is better, so I don't bother with the Albright anymore. For braid to braid I use uni to uni, and for connecting mono to mono leaders I use either surgeons or blood knots depending on the size of line. 2 Quote
