Super User ChrisD46 Posted August 13, 2024 Super User Posted August 13, 2024 Using the Do-It Molds Wacky Weighted Jig Head mold , what are the components you use in terms of hook brand , hook size , metal weed guard and even lead brand / composition ? Lastly any tips / tricks you have learned while making wacky jig heads ? … Thanks I’m advance ! Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted August 13, 2024 Super User Posted August 13, 2024 I don’t make them but it looks like they may take a special hook. You can get sevalon or surflon coated wire in any size you want. If the area isn’t rocky or snaggy you might want 45# test or you could go to 60# or even 90#. I use all three. As for lead just use what you have or can easily get. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted August 13, 2024 Super User Posted August 13, 2024 Barlows tackle should list the hooks and wires that fit in the mold. I will look tonight when I get home and let you know the 2 hooks I use for these. Allen Quote
Super User Munkin Posted August 14, 2024 Super User Posted August 14, 2024 The one's I can find are Mustad 91768 size 2 hooks and 37180 size 1. Allen 1 Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted August 15, 2024 Author Super User Posted August 15, 2024 Perhaps a rookie question - what should I be aware of when shopping for lead to make potential jig heads ? I take it there are different led compositions available thus one or two types / compositions would be considered preferred ? Quote

Check Facebook for people selling lead locally. Allen 2 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted August 15, 2024 Super User Posted August 15, 2024 Allen is spot on about wheel weights. They contain all kinds of stuff that are not good for you. Some contain zinc which can damage your pot. If you can’t get lead locally, lots of jig makers buy from RotoMetals. They have more than one type of lead. 1 Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted August 15, 2024 Author Super User Posted August 15, 2024 Thanks for the lead tips - buying good quality lead ingots is key ! Quote
cadman Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 Another choice other than the ones mentioned above are lead pipe, roofing lead flashing or lead roofing stacks. However if you are a novice at this, than I would suggest you buy dry lead from Roto-Metals. Reason being is that any lead that has been exposed to water (lead Pipe) has to be dried out thoroughly, because if you put a piece of this in a hot lead pot, the lead will splatter and possibly explode all over as the steam and water is trying to evaporate. This could cause severe burns. In reality you should always wear eye protection and face shield along with long sleeve shirt, long pants and shoes. I wear these even in the summer. If you were ever burned by even a small splash of lead you would understand. Stay safe. 1 Quote

Allen Can get size 2 and 4 91768 at captain hooks discount tackle. I use them in my 1/8 oz poisontails as well as i modified my 3/32 and 1/8 oz worm mold to accept them. Makes a great jig for stupid rigging small tubes. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted August 19, 2024 Super User Posted August 19, 2024 I really need to make some weight wacky hooks. Only ones I used to use are disconnected, had a 1/0 jig hook it it, fiber weed guard and could pull fish from heavy cover with conventional gear, no hooks straightened then they were discontinued. Allen They were an actual 1-1/0 2x jig hook with a regulation fiber weed guard in 1/16-1/4oz ......I just remember fishing an flw event as a co and wacky fishing a 6" senko and having my hook open up an a fish pulling it out of the tullies. I bought a bunch of them after that in like 2015-2016, then found out the company stopped making them. Belive they were revenge baits Quote
