Went out for a chicken sandwich…

… and spent $200.

 

When I’m at work I occasionally run over to Sugar Creek Marina to grab some lunch. Their food is actually pretty good compared to grabbing fast food.

 

They also happen to have a good tackle store with competitive pricing. You can see where this is going.

 

I picked up my chicken sandwich, then grabbed three bags of Crush City Freeloaders. Then I realized I needed some more jig heads because I’m always snagging them and losing them.

 

On the way to the register, I walked past the St. Croix rods. I already have one of their BassX rods that I really like and the next thing you know I was carrying another one to the register.

 

And that’s how a chicken sandwich cost me $208.

The way food prices are increasing, it won’t be long before you’re going to be paying that much without getting the tackle. California passed a law, fast food workers are now making $20/hr. A small bag of fries at MacDonald’s is $5.

Our favorite local restaurant is at a marina. The food is excellent. They don’t sell tackle.  I agree with @king fisher go for the tackle and leave with food.   Last time I went to Bass Pro Shops all I bought was a Goo Goo candy cluster and a Coca Cola.

@Koz - you have good luck with those freeloaders? I fished them this weekend as chatterbait evo trailers. I’m not sure if it’s the plastic, the hook keeper, or what, but they didn’t stay on the bait long. Actually cast some of them off. I normally put a drop of superglue on the nose of a trailer, but couldn’t find it this time. I’m wondering if anyone else has had an issue with durability on these? They feel good and tough, but they just kept getting torn up in that evo.

I love the Freeloaders. They have been money this summer.

 

In fact, when I got home tonight I paired my new St. Croix with a Curado, tied on a green pumpkin chatterbait and a green pumpkin Freeloader and went out to my dock.

 

While walking out there I noticed some commotion under the dock, skipped my chatterbait under there and pulled out a two pounder on my first cast with the new rod.

 

For me, the Freeloaders have been durable. I caught 5 or 6 on one the other day and it’s still holding strong. I’ve had only one tear off.

I hate it when that happens, relapse…. Oh well, sounds like you stocked up on some tackle, and have a new rod. You did get a chicken sandwich too…. At least you didn’t go without food and spend that money on gear too, there’s hope. 
Didn’t mention what power on the rod,med-hvy, 6 or 7 footer?

7’ 2” MHF. Pretty much an all purpose rod that I will use mainly for moving baits. Although it’s an inexpensive rod, it performs well. I like them as much as my Exprides. The other week I bought an inexpensive Shimano SLX MM glass rod for crankbaits.

 

But what I need to do is tie on a worm or another bottom bait and see how sensitive it is.

 

For me, the rod is light and comfortable, and just feels great.

I've spent a good bit more than $200 on a fancy meal at a fancy restaurant that I didn't even get to keep.  The wife and I got food poisoning that night.  It might have been worth it if I got a St. Croix rod to go with it.  Though I don't think my wife would agree. 

 

So yeah, you did good!

Everytime I kid my wife about another Amazon package (which we actually need) she quickly fires back that she could go to Target and buy it plus $100 in other things she doesn’t need.

They are great rods. I have two grandsons that fish soft plastics with them. 6’10” ML and 6’8” Med. I put Shimano 2500 NASCI’s on them. The one recently while bass fishing with me caught a 12# Channel Cat on the 6’10” ML w/ 6 lb. SunLine Super Natural mono on a 6” black Yammy cut tail. 
What a fight he had. Between working the rod and adjusting the drag he landed a nice fish. 
At first we didn’t suspect a catfish. Thought it was one of the lakes finest bass. That sure made his day and mine as well. 
Those rods have a great feel. Only my opinion but I don’t think they are a lesser compared to a Mojo or Premiere Series.

You’re right- they really do have a great feel. For me it’s the grip, the balance, and the heft. It just feels right.

I have also had durability issues with them. I think it's because they are flat-sided and so the nose doesn't have a ton of plastic to work with. They definitely work well, though, but I get 3-4 fish out of them before they're toast. Some didn't even get one fish before casting/retrieving tore the nose up on the keeper. But they've got solid action.

 

I still have a pile of Zakos that I've mostly switched back to, ordered a few bags of Spunk Shads that should be here tomorrow to test out.

 

@Koz at least you didn't get distracted by the tackle and forget your sandwich. Gotta accept the small victories sometimes.

Maybe California should pass a law to not allow charging renters $3,000/month for a 700 sqft apartment.

If you’ve not tried the spunk shad, I do believe you’ll be happy. I have tons. When I go to Chattanooga (only about an hour and a half from me), I always stop at hog farmer and stock up on the 4.5 and the 5.5”. I don’t normally downsize very much, so I’ve yet to try the 3.5s. 
 

I’ve tried the chatterspike and it’s ok, but I have a hard time going away from the spunk shads. If you wanna try the chatterspikes, DM me and I’ll send you some to try.

The owner of the restaurant knew I hunted and fished and had a Remington shotgun for sale.

I bought it and he simply added to my bill. Lol
