How in the world do people keep all their setups from getting tangled when there's like 20 of them strapped to each side of the front deck?

I don't like keeping more than 3 on one side of mine otherwise they tangle when I try to grab a new one...and sometimes even those get hung up on each other.  For the life of me I can't figure out how someone keeps them from turning into one giant mess of tanged rods, line, and lures.

For the record I always use my lure keeper on my rod and I lay them down separated, not on top of each other.

What I always did with my outfits was bow string the line and spin the rod so the line wrapped around the rod guides. This keeps the line from tangling with adjacent rods. Plus use lure wraps for treble hooks.

I am very particular about how I lay mine down   I stagger them and make sure the tips are separated.  I can easily have 4 per side.  They are checked and strapped down before I move the boat.  I rarely have them tangled.  One of my fishing buddies piles his up on both sides.  He almost always has them tangled.

On my boat, I split baitcasters and spinning up on each side.  On my buddies boat they get mixed.  I do spin the line around the guides making sure the top 2 guides are wrapped.  I don’t do anything with the baits.  I do have a system on how I stack them and how I grab them and have very few tangles.  We all have a habit of spinning the rods when we pick them up.  If you don’t do that it will cut down on tangles.

Practice and constant attention. When my dad and I fish from his boat, he’s in the front and I back boat. 16’ tracker. He carries four rods in the front facing back and I’ve got 3 or four in the back facing front interlaced. It helps to keep the reel handles parallel to the rods (in my kayak holder I have to do that). Treble hooks are the biggest issue and we normally don’t have more than 3 out of 8 rods with them.

Its the tips and the line near the tip that seems to get tangled most often.  Maybe I will try wrapping the line as some have suggested.

bring less rods :)

I only keep 3 on the deck and they still get tangled!  Maybe I need to just roll with one at a time!

Just like casting reels that backlash,

Rigs on deck (or in the rod locker) do not tangle themselves.

But you knew that.

Wrap the line around the rod - every time.

And give your rigs some space.

No rigs in a 'pile'.

I don't have many on my deck,  and I'm careful how I set them down.   If I get sloppy putting them down or picking them up they'll get tangled.  I tried wrapping the line around a couple wraps, hooked on the guides.  It kept them from getting tangled but I had a couple easy break offs that day.  I figured I was nicking the line hooking it around the guides.  It might have just been time to change line.   I didn't lose any fish due to break offs, but my line broke way too easy a couple times when snagged.  I changed line, and haven't tried wrapping them like that again.

Assuming your talking about after they've been removed from the rod locker and placed on deck for action....... yes mine get tangled every outing.

Yes.

No issues in the rod locker. Just on the deck.

Like Andy said - lay them down neatly, don't pile them up. I usually have 6 on deck and have never had the tangle issue cause I place them down, not drop or toss them.
