1 or our annual 2 derbies is on Friday on a local lake (the second is in late September).  We usually have 2 or 3 teams (of 2) go head to head for 4 hours, do a weigh in, and then go out for beer/lunch aftewards.  The losing team is required to buy a pitcher of beer and lunch for the winning team.

Friday features Team Crestliner which is my Father and his partner versus me and my friend, Greg, which is Team Ranger.  My Father has a 2 year losing streak going so he recruited someone new this time around.  He had previously fished with his weekly golf partner.  His new partner this time around is a 21 year old (my second cousin) who is going to basic Air Force training at the end of August.  To quote my Father "I'm sick of paying for and drinking skunky beer.  I recruited a ringer this time.  You're in trouble.  Bring your wallet with."

I will try to take some photos and post the results.  Hopefully I don't post myself losing and paying for it.  Last year was tough.  It was hot and the water was warm.  A nice cool front has arrived today and the forecast is 75 degrees and partly cloudy for Friday.  I'm looking forward to it.

I'll ask him.  He only said in Texas last time I talked to him.

I’d say that’s it! Everyone entering the Air Force seems to have to start there

Yep - Lackland AFB is right on the outskirts of San Antonio...that's where Basic Training is. Special Training (Security, Computers, Aircraft Mechanic, etc) is done at other bases.

I did my basic training middle of August through end of September...close to the worst time of year to be marching and standing outside in that part of the country...luckily PT was early mornings (up at 4am, on the grounds for calisthenics and running by 4:30)

Back in the 70’s when I was at Lackland that also trained at least some security folks there. Had a couple guys in my flight that went from one side of base to the other when they graduated basic.

Sounds like a great time! I did something similar with a buddy at work. We set a time and whoever caught the most fish won. Loser paid for lunch. We both fished out of the same canoe together.

My partner and I won!  We weighed 13.11 pounds on a 4 fish limit.  Free beer and lunch from the other teams.

My partner Greg was on fire.  He had a pair of 3.5 pounders only 20 minutes in that ended up contributing greatly to our total.  It was very windy and all the fish were stacked up on the choppy side of the lake.  Only caught 2 dinks on the calm side.  Boat control was kind of an issue at times but that's where the fish were.  Here's my partner with his two dandies.

@TnRiver46 I talked to my second cousin and his Air Force training is in fact near San Antonio later this month.

I’ve got another one on Sept 30. It’s the same format, just on a different lake. Fishing there is a little tougher.

Ironically, my partner yesterday will be an opponent in that one.

I’ll re-visit this thread with results after that one. Hoping to go 2 for 2.

Revisiting this one.  I have derby 2.0 in 6 days.  Beer and lunch is on the line again.

Its on another lake though, and the fishing is tougher.  I plan to pre-fish on Saturday morning during the exact hours of the derby to try and find some kind of pattern for derby day on Mon, Sept 30.

Doing my best @Bluebasser86 storytelling  impression of a tourney with this, so bear with me.

Derby number 2 today from 8am - noon. Four fish limit.

Pretty tough conditions, pressured metro lake, hot, windy. My partner and I had 4 legal fish by 9:30am but they were all dinks. Like 13-14 inchers. Couldn’t catch anything bigger.

At 11am, we went to a patch of deeper weeds I had found pre fishing on Saturday morning. BOOM! I caught a pair of nearly 4 pounders in a 10 minute span and got rid of 2 of the dinks. Got ‘em both on a jig worm along a weed line.

Before we pulled up to that spot, my partner said “we’re screwed if we finish with those four dinks. We need to replace 2 of them with quality fish to have a chance.” I agreed with him.

We ended up winning by 0.67 pounds. Those two fish I caught in a 10 minute span won it for us. After I caught those two fish, my partner said to me “Did that really just happen? It’s exactly what we asked for and we may win because of it.”

Another round of free beer and lunch afterwards. Beer goes down a lot smoother when it’s free.

@A-Jay

I don’t fish in any bigger organized tournaments, so these two small derbies with my Father and friends are the only competition I’m in.

They are the two most favorite fishing days of the year for me.  I’ve also been on the losing end a few times too. Not quite as fun.

I should have taken a photo of the two big bass I caught. Dang it.

Well done, @gimruis. I laughed when you stated that you were channeling @Bluebasser86's excellent storytelling style!
