Timpson Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 Just had my first tomato sandwich of the season. Love me some homegrown tomatoes. 9 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted August 3, 2024 Super User Posted August 3, 2024 They are some of my favorites. We’ve been getting ripe ones since mid June. I have a couple of ladies who start them for in their greenhouse. I plant them as soon as the last frost date. 1 Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted August 3, 2024 Super User Posted August 3, 2024 Yes, with some Duke's mayo, a heavy shake or 3 of black pepper, and regular Lay's chips. 5 Quote
throttleplate Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 Living in North Dakota our tomatoes wont be ripe untill 3rd week of august, planted the starter plants from wallmart in first week of june due to a crappy cold rainy May. I enjoy eating them sliced with just salt and pepper. 1 Quote

Super User gim Posted August 4, 2024 Super User Posted August 4, 2024 Mine are just now turning ripe. Most are still green. Planted the smaller Cherry versions this year, the second week of May. Inundated by cucumbers at the moment… Quote
Bazoo Posted August 4, 2024 Posted August 4, 2024 I don't have any maters planted this year. Mater sammich with thick hellmans mayonnaise, Himalayan salt and pepper is good stuff - better still if ya put on a slice of fried bologna. 1 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted August 5, 2024 Super User Posted August 5, 2024 Just made a tomato sandwich for lunch with the Roma tomatoes from our garden. Baguette, mayonnaise, thick sliced Romas, salt and pepper. Delicious. 2 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted August 5, 2024 Super User Posted August 5, 2024 On a side note: I fixed crappie last night and sliced and fried 4 green tomatoes. They were yummy. 1 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted August 5, 2024 Super User Posted August 5, 2024 I’m in Wisconsin and we went to both the Farmers Market and the butcher shop and got delicious tomatoes and thick cut slab bacon for BLT’s. 😋 2 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted August 5, 2024 Super User Posted August 5, 2024 Squirrels have made a huge dent in our tomatoes this year. They will strip them off well before they are orange. Never had this problem before. Quote

Super User Bird Posted August 5, 2024 Super User Posted August 5, 2024 Wife and I moved up on the mountain 20 years ago and haven't had a garden since. BUT tomato plants in raised beds are a must and not much better than a fresh garden tomatoe. I spray cayenne pepper on the plants to discourage the deer 🦌 2 Quote

Functional Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 i usually take it a step further being from an Italian family. fresh slices of Italian bread, mozzarella cheese slice (the round ones or logs in water, not the fake stuff), thick slice of tomato, a pinch of salt, high quality olive oil with a little chopped basil on top and I like to add a little drizzle of balsamic glaze on top of it before the top bread. Some dry red wine with a splash of gingerale makes for a really nice lunch. 3 1 Quote

Timpson Posted August 6, 2024 Author Posted August 6, 2024 Never had the problem with squirrels some bunnies. Then something stripped a couple off a plant no idea what it was. No evidence left behind. 1 Quote

Really i dont know, they taste somwhat like cardboard and styrafoam with very empty seed chambers where the seeds and gelatinous pulp and juice reside. How hard is it to grow a tomato with good rich flavor in large plantations and ship it to the grocery store? 1 Quote

Then sprayed with a gas that turns them red but doesn’t really ripen them before they hit store shelves. At least that’s what I’ve heard. 2 1 Quote
