5by3 Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 I have several older casting reels that will need to be replaced next year. I prefer the feel of Shimanos over other brands and mostly own the curado and citica offerings. How does the SLX XT stack up against these? Would be purchasing 6-8 reels at once and would like to get the best bang for my buck. Thanks in advance! Quote
Woody B Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 I'm not a reel connoisseur. I want my reels to have decent drags, and adjustable brakes. I've got a couple SLX XT's that I really like. I'm usually pretty good with my thumb. Normally I keep 2 brakes engaged with the dial set fairly low. I can engage more brakes and /or turn the dial up when skipping, casting into the wind, or if I had one to someone who wants or needs more brakes. I've got a Curado MGL 150. I like the SLX XT's better. For me the drag on the Curado is kinda "jerky" and the brakes are really sensitive.....meaning it's really easy to go from too little to too much without much adjustment. It's probably just me. I'm sure many people will prefer a Curado. They're not expensive. Buy one to start with and try it out. If you were closer to NC I'd "toss" you one of mine for a trip or two. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 The SLX xt is reminiscent of the e series, seti and forget it dependable work horse but not unrefined. 2 Quote
JackstrawIII Posted August 4, 2024 Posted August 4, 2024 The SLX XT is way better than it has any right to be. Highly recommend. 1 Quote
r83srock Posted August 4, 2024 Posted August 4, 2024 If the xt is anything like the mgl it’s awesome! My favorite reels under $200. I agree the frame profile is very similar to the old school E series, which were excellent reels. Quote

On my MGL It seems like there's very little difference between robbing casting distance and no brakes at all. Quote
5by3 Posted August 4, 2024 Author Posted August 4, 2024 Thanks for the feedback. Looks like I’ll have to give one a try! 1 Quote
