Super User WRB Posted August 1, 2024 Super User Posted August 1, 2024 Just buy the Shimano 2024 SLX 70A, true 70 size reel with MGL ser 3 spool. Don’t let the $150 price sway you, excellent reel. Tom 4 Quote

Super User PhishLI Posted August 1, 2024 Super User Posted August 1, 2024 This is another great option for hard baits. DAIWA 22 TATULA TW 80 (japanlureshop.com) It's Zillion buttery smooth on the retrieve. Aluminum frame AND side plate. It's also quite small if you happen to like compact reels. The T wing allows plastic lines to just flow out. 3 Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted August 1, 2024 Super User Posted August 1, 2024 I thought I’d add something in the event you’re not aware, reels purchased from Japan have no warranty support. If it breaks on you, you can fix it yourself or hire out.. You might DM, DVT on the particulars. 1 Quote
Eric 26 Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 Although I’m not trying to muddy the waters anymore than has been and without quoting anyone I’m going to add to this thread again. Number 1 yes that’s the reel which after looking back I paid $116.70 to my door in Illinois which included the more “expensive” shipping but as all their orders do included a free “gift” which was a Megabass 110 jr. I also purchased through JLS a Tatula 80 that I absolutely love every bit as much as my SLX MGL 71 that came with a “Jack Hammer” chatterbait and as has been pointed out on this site has a heck of a parts aftermarket available including bfs spools and everything else from bling to bearings at a wide range of costs. Lastly if I’m not mistaken and I welcome being called to the carpet for a public flogging if I am wrong the reels I just mentioned are produced in the same factory regardless of what market they are headed to with the exception of a few different parts which in my mind means the parts should be/are available in case something happens to the reel but I don’t feel the warranty means much other than the initial purchase if you receive a defective reel. Lastly although I don’t use my equipment as much as many others on here I’ve not experienced any problems with any of my gear including several “other” branded reels which again there are quite a few guys on here that have way more experience with all of the above mentioned points . Best of luck with your decision and I’m looking forward to reading what you ultimately wind up with. 2 Quote
Rockhopper Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 @HawkeyeSmallie There has only been 1 version of each of those reels, and they are both in the current lineup. Curado 70 mgl weighs 6.9oz and has 12lb drag Curado 150 mgl weighs 6.5oz and has 13lb drag And no, you do not feel the weight difference. Quote

T2DM Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 150 size spools for jerk bait fishing are a little overkill IMO. I have SLX DC XT, 24 Metanium DC both are 70 sizes for very windy winter day and Curado 71K MGL, JDM 23 Metanium 101 MGL on a slightly windy winter day. I also think the new 24 SLX 70A should be good for this application too. 1 Quote

Asian Portal is solid though (where I order from ) I just ordered a Vanford 2500 shallow spool w 5.3:1 ratio and had it on the 5th day. Crazy fast .. 1 Quote

For slightly over $100 I can spend the difference on more lures. lol 2 Quote
HawkeyeSmallie Posted August 7, 2024 Author Posted August 7, 2024 Well I just purchased the 2024 Shimano SLX with a 6.3 gear ratio. Total cost after shipping and conversions was $132.26. Not going to lie, I feel "weird" putting a $132 reel on a $500 pole but that's what I went with. I think the main reason I'm buying a cheaper reel is because I ABSOLUTELY NEED the 23 Shimano Calcutta BFS reel. OMG is that thing beautiful. 3 Quote
MiceNReets Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Price is just subjective. Use what works and enjoy it. Don’t even think of a $130 reel on a $500 rod. The advancement on the lower end-mid range reels are fantastic these days. 3 Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted August 7, 2024 Super User Posted August 7, 2024 Reels are important, rods are more important in my opinion.. However I spend greatly on both 😉 4 1 Quote

Well, the majority of use will be cold water so I figured I'd slow it down even though you don't move the bait with your reel. The Vision 110's also have light wire hooks so maybe the slower gear will help with not horsing the fish in too much and bend the hooks. IDK, no expert. 1 Quote

I'm exactly same way, most of my jerk bait reels and winter setup are all 6.X gear ratio and never had any issues. 1 Quote

I am looking to order 2-3 reels but I like free gifts, lol. 1 Quote

I'm new to this "JDM stuff" and I saw a previous comment from a different thread that mentioned it was dumb to buy Shimano/Daiwa/etc gear in America as you can get cheaper/better gear across the pond. IDK, I'm new to this and it's the first time I've bought a high end pole. Just want to put a nice reel on her. 😀 Do you know which model for the 70 size? Sorry, I'm a newb. I just don't know what to look for since they use different terms/numbers. The MGL 70 K is the refresh of the MGL 70. Just got one for jerkbaits myself. Fantastic reel, cast smooth and retrieves with the competent solid feel typical of a Curado. If you're not careful, you'll spool the reel on a long bomb cast. 1 Quote
Bandersnatch Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Can we all agree that the met 70 isn’t a 70? Hell, it’s a 150. They have done everything possible to keep making money on that sub par frame. Yes it’s solid, yes it soulless, yes they have made the 150, the 100, the 100s? And now the 70. Make a new reel. Very few people want a 70 sized spool in a 150 frame. 2 Quote

Among other things, kills IPR. Quote
