CaughtMeABiggun Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 I haven't seen any any announcement, but it looks like Rapala is doing away with the 13 Fishing lures. I know that Rapala recently bought a majority stake in 13 Fishing. Has anyone seen an official statement on this? I was a big fan of 13 fishing products, but if this is how Rapala is starting their management of the brand I think I will look elsewhere for rods, reels, and baits in the future. Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted July 18, 2024 Super User Posted July 18, 2024 I could understand it. I'm sure 13 fishing lures were outsourced anyway. And Rapala has a significant lure presence in the market. But they don't have a presense in rods and reels which they now do. I'm sure they only bought them for the rods and reels. 4 Quote
CaughtMeABiggun Posted July 18, 2024 Author Posted July 18, 2024 I have a feeling that they are going to destroy rod and reel part of that brand as well. Seems like Rapala is more old school about the way they operate compared to how 13 fishing has operated in the past. Only time will tell, but I think taking the "fun" out of those rods and reels will hurt them in the long run. I have several 13 fishing reels and the shelf appeal from the colors is what led me to giving their reel a try over others. I made a comment like this over in the rod and reel section and it got flagged for approval so hopefully this one is ok.. Quote
Susky River Rat Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 I have some 13 fishing ice rods and reels. Never used any of there other stuff. The ghost reel was very sought after a few years ago. Quote
Super User Spankey Posted July 18, 2024 Super User Posted July 18, 2024 I’m a big fan of Rapala hardbaits. 50+ years I guess. Face of the company has changed a lot since buy ups and buy outs. Hope they hang in there. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted July 18, 2024 Super User Posted July 18, 2024 Didn't even know they made lures only rods/reels. Allen Quote

KP Duty Posted July 19, 2024 Posted July 19, 2024 Talked to some guys at the Rapala booth @ the classic about the acquisition. I was like "you guys aren't going to screw around with the concept series are you!?" I was told "I don't think so", which means they don't really know. Why would they? I'm a fan..Best thing 13 makes are the concept reels. Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted July 19, 2024 Super User Posted July 19, 2024 I have a handful of 13 Fishing hard baits. Quality baits with great components. Not to mention some of the nicest-looking paint jobs around. It's sad Rapala has put the kibosh on them. Quote
MAN Posted July 19, 2024 Posted July 19, 2024 I know a guy who tattoo'd 13 Fishing logo across his whole right arm, and for that reason alone they can not cease to exist. 2 Quote

I hear 13's hardbaits are good, but I get why Rapala is bowing out and just selling Rapalas. 2 Quote

Not the first time Rapala has done something like this, and won't be the last. They bought Terminator and discontinued arguably the top spinnerbait of all time. Then they bought Storm and quit those lures too. Rapala can go kick rocks as far as I'm concerned. They won't be getting any of my money. 3 Quote

Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted July 19, 2024 Super User Posted July 19, 2024 FFS has cratered demand for hardbaits in general, but especially for crankbaits. Moreover, Rapala is one of the few brands that still has some of the quintessential crankbaits on the market, so it's not like VMC/Rapala doesn't have a good hardbait brand in their umbrella. Ultimately though, this is just more proof that when small mom and pop fishing tackle companies sell out to the big conglomerates, the only real loser is the consumer. Nothing good ever comes from a big corporate brand buying out small mom and pop businesses. It is however part of the American dream and capitalism, so it is what it is. 2 Quote
Pogues2300 Posted July 19, 2024 Posted July 19, 2024 It is what it is is probably my least favorite saying ever… implies there’s nothing that could possibly be done different which is true if we are talking about gravity or something like that lol 1 Quote

My luck I would've gotten a tattoo and they go out of business a year later. 2 Quote
Pogues2300 Posted July 19, 2024 Posted July 19, 2024 If you really loved Subway which I can’t see being a thing probably a great deal considering the price increase lol… I don’t mind the place but correct me if I’m wrong but that seems like one of the greatest price increases in recent years. You can go to a nice little diner for the same price as the old “5$ foot long of old” 1 Quote
