I use a little bit of everything. I flip them if they are small, less than 2 pounds. Anything larger, I generally lip. I have never belly grabbed a large one, but I've done it to some smaller ones when unhooking them. I haven't been hooked badly, but I've had some scratches and ******. So I am extra careful.

I don't net them as I fish from the bank most of the time, but I  am thinking about a net because some of the places I fish, there is about a 3' drop, so if I were to catch a hawg, it'd be hard to land without flipping it.

I do think about it.

There's a ton of mostly very small and delicate structures in our hands.

Repeated driving any type hook deep into them is a little wacky and mostly unnecessary.

Certainly Not part of my fishing.

Not looking to change the quality of my life.

Using a net and as well as following a safe handling practice is more my style.

Especially when treble looks are involved.

yep.  This is where I’ve netted out. Life is too short to deal with a hook in the hand. It might happen but I’m going to do my best to not let it. Smaller fish and single hooks I will boat flip, usually straight to my hand. Anything bigger, agitated, or with treble hooks and I’ll just net it. If there is any question I’ll just net it. Once it’s in the net it can hang out in the water and breathe just fine for as long as I need it to hang out there. They calm down quickly in a net. If it’s a tricky hook situation i bring the pliers to the net while the fish is in the water. No sense taking an unnecessary risk for something we do for fun.

I agree about the hand being injured with forever damage. If I had ripped that hook out, like my oldest son claimed that he would do, would have damaged three nerves in my index finger.

The er doc showed this to my son and my son never brought it up again!!
