Ideal line weight for 3oz swimbait?

Just had a line failure recently during a cast.  So, I figured I’d pose the question, looking for recommendations.. 

 

for casting a 3-4oz swimbait, what would be the proper line weight that would not break off in mid swing?

 

 

Btw….I opted to post in this forum, despite it being a line question, because I preferred to draw the attention of the seasoned swimbait users in particular, for best advice.

A quality 20 lb mono if it is a treble hook bait. 25 lb fluro if it is a jig hook bait.

I agree with Big Swimbait. I retie after an hour of throwing any big swimbait. Don't check, just retie.

Depends on what swimbait and what rod/reel but I'd say 16-20 LB, retie very often.

15-20 and make sure your knot is good. If you burn the line while cinching your knot it will cause problems.

And I presume a braid/leader is not advisable?  Just the straight mono or flouro by itself?

Braid to leader is a great option. Just perfect your connection knot. Then the line recommendations still apply for the leader material.

Right, guess I’m just concerned about that leader knot introducing an additional point of failure possibility

20lb FC or 20-25lb Big Game are both perfect choices.

Burn the line?  Not sure what you mean by that

20 lb Yozuri Hybrid or Big Game, or CXX even. All are good. 25 lb if you want to whip it and keep it. I sometimes prefer the snap off on backlashes rather than having a big bait coming back at me. 
‘burning’ a knot happens when you cinch it without any lubricant- the friction weakens the line at the knot.

Oh ok, well I’m accustomed to slobbing saliva on my knots, so I think I’m ok there.

A valid concern. Line Lab on YouTube tested most of the connection knots and the FG was the strongest but to me it's a PITA to tie. The Tactical Bassin' guys swear by the Blood Knot and it is very easy. I use the Lefty Kreh knot because it's easy on the eyes of someone approching 70. I have never broken it at the knot - always in the leader.
