I was fly fishing for bass and ended up catching a big ol blue cat on a clouser minnow. It was like bringing in a cinder block on that fly reel

I usually catch bowfin which are a pita to unhook! I’ve been catching speckled perch in heavy cover with big punch rigs, 5/0 hooks heavy tungsten, plain weird. And of course the usual alligator. At least I’ve gotten most all of my rigs back!

I have caught numerous perch and crappie on a Chatterbait with a 4" swimbait trailer. I don't know how they even get it swallowed to get hooked but they can do it.

My weirdest one is I caught a steelhead on a 1/2oz spinnerbait.  That was a huge surprise.

Just the ones I can think of from the last several years:

-Northern Pike on Spinnerbait, buzzbait, Senko, jerkbait, t-rigged lizard, t-rigged craw, shakyhead worm, ned rig, drop shot

-Rock Bass on in-line spinners, spinnerbait, grub, senko, drop shot, jigworm, ned rig

-Bowfin on Senko, jigworm, t-rigged worm, buzzbait, spinnerbait, frog, crankbait

-Crappie on crankbait, bladed jig, jerkbait, grub

-Channel Catfish on a bladed jig, spinnerbait

-Warmouth on t-rigged creature, ned rig, shakyhead, senko

-Perch on a crankbait

-Pumpkinseed on a spinnerbait

-Creek Chub on in-line spinner

-Drum on a flipping jig

-Coho Salmon on a keitech swing impact

My takeaway from this thread is that Maine has much less diverse fisheries than other places.

Hope you were careful not to remove the slime coat!

Could be, but in my experience, small waters can vary pretty widely in frequency of bycatch.  In some places I fish, when I target bass, i just catch bass. In others (river spots especially), it's like spinning a roulette wheel every cast in terms of what will bite next.

The Mississippi was such a roulette wheel. I loved not knowing what was tugging.

I remember one day in particular: smb, lmb, walleye, sauger, white crappie, white bass, sheepshead, mooneye, and carp.

A few more... walleye on a devils horse, gator on a flipping jig, carp on a husky jerk, bowfin on a spook, which is to date still my most devastating topwater strike, it was literally like a small explosive went off at my lure.

I lived in Piscataquis county and I would agree. Streamwise in Maine you have Bluegill, rainbows, brookies, smallmouth. Maybe a salmon, usually not. Lakes are a bit more with togue and salmon. Where I am now though, I can hit a stream and catch largemouth, bowfin, 5-6 species of bluegill/bream/sunfish, two gar species, and even saltwater fish like redfish and specs if I go downriver a few more miles. Lakewise is pretty much the same story and same species since they are all impoundments here in the lowcountry. All that said, I miss fishing in Maine. I had a place right on the Piscataquis where the pleasant met it and I could walk right out and fly fish.

Thankfully you practice catch and release. Glad it wasn't worse. I've been hooked in the back.

Sometimes it feels like a bass of a lifetime but quickly turns into a “darn it” moment. They pull and yank and grab the bottom like an infinite snag. Often, I’ve been surprised to get my lures back. Just the other night I had one smack my big musky jitterbug, and with all those hooks grabbing, I was surprised to get the lure back!

I got a carp on an underspin once. I thought I had a trophy smallie. Those dreams were soon dashed, but it was still fun, especially for January in Ohio.

I caught a 4-5# bowfin on a white and red spinnerbait a week ago.  I saw it surface just off a weed edge, within a long casting distance.  It whacked my bait right away and for a while I thought I had a dandy bass on, big headshakes and pulling drag.

We catch too many pike on drop shots and even when flipping soft baits.

Most recent ones...

1 - Green Sunfish on Free Rig w/ Yoto Worm

2 - Flathead on Zman TRD

3 - Channel Cat on Spinnerbait

4 - Channel Cat on Super Spook JR

5 - Crappie on Jackhammer

6 - Lots of Walleye on just about everything

My most memorable catches that were not bass in no particular order:

1.17lb Carp on a Baby Brush Hog during a tournament.

2. 20" Brown trout on a bass tube.

3. About a 20lb Flathead catfish on a Keitech creature bait.

4. Me at 6' a Bluecat that when standing holding it chest level, tail touched the boat on a swim jig.

5. Caught 2 Redfish at the mouth of the Chickamuxen (However you spell it) off the Potomac river that I though were Stripers on a spinnerbait.

Now I caught a ton of different species fishing for bass that are gamefish. As such I don't consider Walleye, Pike, Musky in this category.

Non-Fish catches

1. Owl picked up a Jitterbug off the surface of a pond.

2. Bat on a popper (There is a thread of this).

3. Beaver hooked in the side with a crankbait.

4. Snapping turtle on a Baby Brush Hog.

5. Northern water snake that hit a Berkeley Gulp worm.

This is fun!

I'm very fortunate to live in productive waters...I usually have incidental catches daily.

In the last week or so:

1) Caught a small Crappie on a 2.8" Keitech Fat Swing Impact in Sun Gill. On Dropshot.

2) Nice Perch on 2.5" Deps Cover Scat in Watermelon Pro Blue. Weightless.

3) 7.5lb Bowfin. Deps Cover Scat in Watermelon Pro Blue. Weightless. This was no joke on light tackle!!

4) Largest incidental fish to date was a 20lb Carp on Blue/Black Chatterbait Minimax. This was on 4lb test. I am also 50lbs heavier on that photo!

Yesterday while beating the bank with a chatterbait , something busted shad a cast away , which is rare for me. They are almost always too far away. I fired my chatterbait at it , let it sink a few feet then started the retrieve . Immediately it was slammed by a five lb channel cat. I thought I had hooked  a new pb bass.
