rboat Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 I always find it interesting on catching something else when you were bass fishing, I asked before what you caught besides bass, but thought it may be interesting to follow up and see what lure triggered these other species. 1. musky on a chartruese/white spinnerbait 2. crappie on a chrome/black rattletrap. 3. eastern chain pickerel on a (junebug trick worm) (a chartruese/black squarebill), (electric shad kietech) (white spinnerbait)- more pickerel than I wanted.😒 4. mudfish/bowfin on a white spinnerbait. 5. channel catfish on a yellow roostertail. 6. big bluegill on a shad color pop r. 7. gar on white spinnerbait. What you got? 2 Quote
Super User islandbass Posted July 13, 2024 Super User Posted July 13, 2024 I caught a large trout with a home made crank bait while targeting bass. It smashed the living dickens out of fought hard and I knew it wasn’t a bass. Not too much variety of other species like down south. So when bass fishing you might catch a trout, blue gill, perch or pumpkin seed. Rarely a small catfish on the western side of WA State. Quote
papajoe222 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Catfish on a ChugBug Muskie on a lipless crank Dogfish on a RocketShad Crappie on a FatFree Shad Northern pike on a french fry worm Walleye on a buzzbait Quote
Bazoo Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 When I was a young adult, I was fishing a farm pond, and I caught a 6 1/2 pound channel cat on a jointed Rapala Minnow. It didn't put up too much of a fight. I weighed it on a de-liar, and released him. I continued to fish the same spot, and in a minute, caught another catfish of the same size. This one put up a tremendous fight, ripping the wire out of the back half of the lure, and the loop out of the nose about 1/2". I weighed that one, and it weighed 6 1/4 pounds. I always wondered if it was the same fish, or a different one. I often catch other species. Warmouth on a 6" Zoom Lizard Pretty little sunfish on a Fat Albert Grub Some kind of sunfish on a 1/4 H20X Mini Squarebill crankbait Pretty energetic critters to go after the Rebel Pop-r Very nice Crappie on the same H20X crankbait Crappie on a Beetle Spin 34" Gar on an H20X squarebill in American Shad color Catch a mess of goggleeyes on various soft plastics, this one on a Zoom Finess worm They also hit crankbaits, like this Ozark Trails This is about the healthiest one I've ever seen. 5 Quote

Super User casts_by_fly Posted July 13, 2024 Super User Posted July 13, 2024 NJ doesn’t have the best bass fishing however for fish variety it’s amazing how much is packed in a small area. Just one of the lakes around has four types of bass (small, large, hybrid, rock), musky, walleye, pickerel, two perch, both crappie, trout, all of the pan fish, and of course carp and cats. Might even be bowfin but I haven’t heard of much. That’s just one lake. And in one day a couple seasons back I caught most of those all in a day. Within 30 minutes of the house in the lakes I normally fish you can add northerns, landlocked Atlantic salmon, lake trout, and plenty of other oddities. Sometimes you never know what’s going to eat your lure and it doesn’t matter what lure. Some of the more notable ones for me: musky on a rage bug. It bit me off in the end but I’d have never thought that one walleye on a choppo (two in fact) and another on a spinnerbait. All 24” fish crappie on a 5” dshad. Only a 12” crappie but he inhaled it northern on a jig head minnow- not because he ate it but because I landed it 8# hybrid on a spinnerbait- not because he ate it but because I wasn’t expecting it 1 Quote
Texas Flood Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Caught a nice size channel cat last weekend using a tokyo rig with a beaver on. That thing stunk! Quote

Some of it might make you scratch your head I caught my first drum ever about 8 weeks ago. Probably caught a dozen more since, and 12/13 came on ripping a jigging spoon off the bottom. But one hit a shallow running jerkbait. I know basically nothing about drum other than for the first few moments after hitting a spoon, I think I have a big smallie on the other end, and then I realize I've been fooled again. So is the jerkbait drum a bigger a**hole than the regular a**hole drums, or can I expect all drum to be equal a**holes? I want to plan out my disdain properly. scott 1 Quote

detroit1 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 I can't count it, but i had a 40"+ musky on a 1" twister tail with 4# line early one spring. Had her on for what seemed like 10 minutes, but in reality probabaly only 4. I don't keep a net in the boat, so when i finally got her close i tried to "collar"it but she was so thick i couldn't get my hand around her. At least my wife got a couple pics when i got ot close/on the surface. It didn't count because i didn't get it in the boat. I do catch pike up to 30" on a dropshot. Gimruis, Bazoo needs a talk about his hair haha. Just kiddin' Bazoo.. 1 Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted July 13, 2024 Super User Posted July 13, 2024 @gimruis TX much better. Just let the gods of heat, sun, and fire know how you would like to be cooked, though. If you would like to be slow roasted, fried, baked, grilled, thrown into a crock pot, etc. 1 Quote

pdxfisher Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 In NC I caught a 20ish pound carp twitching a Rapala at dusk. My buddy and I both thought I had a new state record on for a bit. In PA my buddy caught a 10lb channel cat on a jitterbug night fishing. Once again we were think 10lb bass. I waded out in the pitch black to land the crazy thing. Used to catch a lot of cats at night on spinnerbaits. Out here I catch quite a few channel cats on Ned rigs but my best catch was a 8+lb steelhead on 4lb test while panfishing one day. That was a shocker. Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted July 14, 2024 Super User Posted July 14, 2024 I caught this big girl on 6 lb. test with an F13 Rapala while fishing for smallmouth. Over the decades, I caught a few her size, but always unhooked them in the water for my safety and theirs. This time, I had a big enough net to bring one aboard. I wish you could see her full length, but she wrapped around my arm like a python. I love the belly on your hybrid, @Team9nine. The weirdest thing I caught while bass fishing was a Mirror carp, as ugly a freshwater fish that swims. I was fishing smallmouth again on the Mississippi and I think I was using four-pound test. It took about twenty minutes to land her. They look like this: 4 Quote
