I took advantage of the BOGO and picked up a M/H and a heavy rod for my son for his birthday. 2 is always better than one, right?? He’s just really getting into bass fishing at almost 17 years old and mainly fishes ours and the neighbored small farm pond. I need to get reels for them now. What’s everyone’s thoughts on the Cobb rods and what reel would you pair them with for a teenager? Budget is under $100 each. Thanks for any input!

Top choice would be 24 Tatulas for a little over $100 but they come from Aliexpress and that's a 4 week wait and they will be over budget with tax.  That hyper drive and aluminum frame and side plate make for freakishly smooth and solid feeling reels. A bit over budget though.  In that case get the Lews LFS for $75 each.

@dixiemagnum80 As long as you’re comfortable buying from Japan my suggestions are either a Shimano SLX MGL or a Daiwa Tatula 80, the SLX is at $100 and the Tatula is at $107 available through Japan Lure Shop. I have both bought from Japan Lure Shop. If you do go to the site the SLX MGL is listed as the 24 SLX. JLS has the Tatula 100 listed for $111.49 also if you want a larger spool, their shipping is reasonably priced and with express shipping at $12.50 for my location I received my reels in under 7 days.

I'm not fancy, I dont know how to link a single post so here is a copy/paste for what I just put up in another thread.

 

"for lower cost reels I have the below 3 for a few years.

SLX MGL: Nice little reel, handles very light lures down to and including a ned rig if wanted. Fits my hand perfectly. Only downside is it seems the brakes are a hair touchy and it seems to go from not enough brake to too much very easy. Takes a bit more for me to dial in this reel so if you are swapping a wide range of bait weights it could be a chore. Tied for my favorite handle next to the Lews LFS SS.

 

Fuego CT: Nice reel, for me it seems to shine with heavier lures like spinners, chatterbaits, etc. Id say 3/8oz and up is a nice good all around reel. For my hands its a bit big/round for me but its still manageable. Knobs are beefier on this reel than the SLX and LFS, not my favorite but thats personal taste. 

 

Lews LFS SS: Wont throw down to a ned rig but will do down to a 1/4 and 1/8oz Trig and jig and all the way up to a 2oz swimbait. Despite only having mag brakes the reel is very easy to dial in. This has become my favorite reel for everything but skipping (the SV spool reels just do better here). Can be had regularly for like $80, sometimes cheaper if you really hunt. 

 

For reference I use a Medium glove. I may try a Curado for the hype but at this point with the reels I have the LFS SS is my go to reel. "

I agree, I keep trying nicer reels and find myself going back to these. Spend the extra money on the rod.

Thanks all! I’ve been doing my research also and these have all been on my radar. I got what I was looking for which was some reinforcement on my thoughts from folks who have actually used them. Thanks again!
