I have a 2001 Ranger Comanche 520vx with a 2001 Mercury Optimax 225hp.  It's has always ran fine. At the end of last season we noticed a gas leak. This spring I had the source of the leak, fuel pump, replaced. It has not been right since and no subsequent trips to the mechanic have figured it out. When I put it in gear and throttle up the response is slow. It takes several minutes for it to get up on plane. However, yesterday at a small derby, I figured put that if I put the throttle down and raise the jack plate all the way it will take off the way it used to I then have to lower the jack plate back down. Has anyone else ran into this that may be able to provide some insight?

Obviously, you have a loss of power somewhere in your system.  Verify you got the right fuel pump, replace all fuel filters, check venting, make sure your prop is not fouled with line, and lastly because it is the most expensive, remove and flow test injectors after you have a compression check done to verify you haven’t dropped a cylinder.

Go to another Mercury mechanic and cut your losses.
The common denominator is the fuel pump, have it replaced properly, it sounds like it was not installed correctly or defective.

I would start with looking at each spark plug. Number the plugs so you don’t mix them up. Spark plugs tell you how the fuel is burning by the residue colors; chalky white too lean, tan is good and black is too rich, if oily a dead cylinder.

Compression test each cylinder while the plugs are out.; 100-110 psi is normal range.
