DaubsNU1 Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 I'm still fishing the same four casting rods and five spinning rods purchased in the 1990's....but I have added three new casting rods and one used in the past year. And two new spinning rods. I blame @A-Jay for my recent jerkbait purchases : ) And I did stock up on pike lures for the upcoming trip to Canada...the bait monkey got me good that week! 2 1 Quote

Jerkbaits ARE my biggest weakness. And to make it even worse, One of the Newest patterns I purchased turned out to be just ridiculously effective. Probably won't help moving forward as far as keeping some type of cap on the inventory. But it sure was fun. 😄 A-Jay 3 Quote

Bazoo Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 I'm still on the lookout for a few new things, but mostly I'm content to refine the techniques I already have. I don't have a lot of extra put back, so I'm working on stocking a little bit of the go to stuff. I have 3 baitcasting rods and I'd like 3 more, and 2 spinning rods, and would like 1-2 more, to feel well rounded. I'd rather master a smaller amount of gear than to have a huge collection of stuff that I'm mediocre with. I'm looking to get the boy a baitcasting reel and rod to learn on. I'd guess it'll need dual brakes and be a fiberglass rod, since he's about to turn 5. He wants to learn, and I'm tired of repairing cheap spinning rods and zebcos. He likes to cast a weighted texas rig regardless of conditions so it should work just fine for him. I still haven't replaced the Terminator Titanium spinnerbait I lost last year, and I am still lamenting it. If the water level on the lake goes down anytime soon I'll be looking in the area it was lost too. I've went back 4-5 times already, poking around with my hand and magnets. 3 Quote
PourMyOwn Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 I pour all my own plastics and jigs, and my terminal tackle is enough to last the rest of my life. Don't get me started on rods and reels. All I really buy these days is old 1980s crankbaits like Bomber 4As and mud bugs. It's about 60% collecting, 40% fishing. One of these days I'll sell off a bunch of stuff. 1 Quote
Super User Koz Posted July 6, 2024 Super User Posted July 6, 2024 I fish a decent number of different lakes and try and buy baits to match the hatch. I’m lucky that I have a decent tackle shop nearby so I don’t have to order too much online. As for rods and reels, I have only one spinning setup and at some point this year I’ll probably buy one more. That reminds me - I think TW is having a sale right now… 1 Quote
crypt Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 I was in a 12 step program at one time......but I got better.......I quit the after step 1 and it solved all my problems.....I see I buy....no problem. 2 Quote
GRiver Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 Rods and reels almost set, want to buy a couple trolling rigs for striped bass. Soft plastics I’m ok for a while, but I kinda went nuts for hard baits this year, but I have an excuse. Ok this is it…. I don’t have much experience with crank and jerk baits… still don’t. I figured I’d better get extras…because, I’ve lost more baits than the fish I’ve caught. Sometimes I think the bait monkey is in the boat with me, saying “ yea cast over there, no no, there is no snags, go ahead cast. Worst is when he screams “ It’s a bite, set the hook!” Only to be a snag. “I’m bad dude…. Thought it was a fish” so the bait monkey won this year, glad I’ve bought Ali express, EBay and Bass pro for most. 1 Quote

Super User Raul Posted July 7, 2024 Super User Posted July 7, 2024 Quite honestly I enjoyed purchasing stuff as much as fishing Notice I didn't say fishing or catching fish with it 95% of my fishing stuff is new and hasn't touched the water I don't need hundreds of lures to catch fish and for years I pretty much fished with the same lures over and over again and caught a ton of fish of course you will have to purchase stuff every now and then, hooks, sinkers and soft plastic baits mostly, a novelty every now and then the BaitMonkey is still siting on my shoulder the only difference is that now it demands other things instead of fishing stuff My 29" Sony Trinitron CRT started acting goofy, took it to the TV repair guy ( man that thing is heavy ! ), let's hope it can be fixed but meanwhile the sneaky little critter is trying to convince me in getting a 51" he saw in FB market place because WE NEED a 51" to hook up all the retro consoles I have hooked to the 29". 2 Quote
HOV02 Posted July 7, 2024 Posted July 7, 2024 I use 60-80# braid when bottom fishing and use the least/lightest amount of terminal tackle necessary. I carry 2-8 oz egg sinkers, 2/0-8/0 circle hooks, SPRO swivels, and 20-80# spools of fluorocarbon leader. My rods and reels are Avet LX or Shimano Torium 30's on Shimano Trevala rods. Some will say you need heavier gear or don't need fluorocarbon. Quote
Super User Spankey Posted July 8, 2024 Super User Posted July 8, 2024 Buying for myself has been down some the last couple of years. I have a 17, 14 and 3 year old grandsons that are fishing with me at different times and I’ve been trying to hook them up with some half decent stuff. 3 yo is just starting. I'm always ready to buy a new color of a soft plastic that is productive. Crankbait fishing is a big part of my fishing, like to have spares and spares that I add additional paint colors to them. Took a long time for me to buy or try some of the Z-man stuff. Over the winter I bought a few variations to try. Been fishing them lately and to my surprise they are catching a mixed bag of bass, walleye and channel catfish. They do hold up well to the bite, don’t think I’ll go jumping full bandwagon with Zman stuff but it’s a decent product. I stopped buying Z-Man because all you have to do it drop one Z-Man product into your tacklebox instead of the original package and it fuses to your other lures. 1 Quote

That’s what I heard would or might happen. So I’ve been keeping them in the original packaging, and have the Zman stuff in a Bass Mafia money bag. It’s basically a HD Zip-Loc bag. The worms, creatures and craws I bought over the winter have produced fish. Just hopping and dragging them, fishing as slow as I can. Bite has been slow here in this heat wave. I’m not ready to put Zman on any pedestal yet, have other plastics that get bit well. The higher float of the elastic material might just be a different look. That was my reason for trying them. Catching the few Walleyes in this heat wave has been a real surprise. 2 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted July 8, 2024 Super User Posted July 8, 2024 I keep all my plastics in bags...sometimes not the ones they came in though. I get laminated bait bags from These People...they even hold up to Elaztech. Lets me custom-size the bags to the bait instead of having bags that are WAY too big for some of them. Then those bags go into Plano Open Compartment boxes (3607-10 or 3707-10) sorted by type (Stick Baits, Craws, Paddletails, etc) 2 Quote

TheSwearingAngler Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 This is only my third season back, if I’m being honest last year I was out of control.. I had spent all winter researching and I’m a sucker for a good sale. Dick’s recently ran back to back sales on Yum, 1st time was 33% off limit 24.. 2nd sale was 50% off limit 36… so yeah I bought 60 bags of Dingers. They won’t go bad and I have one tied on at all times. Just last month St Croix customer appreciation sale was $75 Mojo Bass rods… last year I probably would have bought 1 of each. However I limited myself to 2 because they were for techniques I’m looking to get better with. Hopefully at this rate next year I should be able to really slow down on my spending. Quote
Susky River Rat Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 I usually buy stuff on sale. Repeats of stuff I already have for when I lose it. Although I am eyeing up another metanuim. That’s just because I am a freak about having all the same rods and reels. 1 Quote

Super User Spankey Posted July 9, 2024 Super User Posted July 9, 2024 I wish some manufacturers would reintroduce some of their plastic variations that were around 25-30 years ago. They produced a lot of fish for me back then. They have been off the market for so long that they would be a new product to many guys today. Berkley, Mr. Twister and Mann’s had some great stuff that’s been long gone. But I understand about moving forward, marketing, and competition. It is what it is. 1 Quote

Or even more recent. Zoom's Fluke Tail Goby is a great little bait for drop-shot or finesse-Jika, but it's not made anymore. I've had to fill in from places that still have some stock - including Evil-Bay. With other makers coming out with Goby style baits, you'd think Zoom would dig out the molds and put it back into production. 1 Quote
