born2climb Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 I posted this while ago in another thread and client have the option to delete it. After posting it, I realized the thread wasn’t actually about swelling Red Eyes. So I’m starting a new thread. If not appropriate, feel free to delete… Just discovered two swollen Red Eye Shad in my tackle box. I know for a fact that these weren’t swollen the last time I went fishing. Which means this happened the past Monday. I left my crankbait box out on the deck for a while, switching colors while trying to figure out what the bass wanted. I shot an email off to SK to see if they’ll make good on them. Does anyone know of them replacing any of the swollen RES? A quick internet search shows this isn’t a new thing. I’ve come to like RES over Rattle Traps and Super Spots, but I don’t fish only on cloudy days. If this is a common occurrence, I’ll be steering clear of them. The one on the left is as it should be. The red one shows a little swelling. The blue one is just a full-blown fattie! All three were in the same compartment of the tackle tray. The red one was on top, the white on the bottom. Quote
Pat Brown Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 Can't leave baits on the deck in the summer. Happens to all hard baits. Not fun! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 3, 2024 Global Moderator Posted July 3, 2024 Yes, Strike King will usually replace them. 1 Quote
LonnieP Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 I had a couple of SK cranks blow up in my box recently Quote

In over 40 years of fishing, I’ve never had it happen before. Granted, I just bought this G3 Gator Tuff last year. All aluminum, no carpet. And it gets HOT. Anyone ever tried painting the top of tackle trays white to help reduce the heat absorption? 2 Quote

I've never noticed it before - just read about it here - but it's probably happened to me before - I just think in general - for me - the rocks and branches get them long before the sun does! 😂😂😂👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 I agree that maybe you could see if Strike King will send you a new one. Super User scaleface Posted July 4, 2024 Super User Posted July 4, 2024 Thats crazy. I have 15 of them and not one has done that. 2 Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted July 4, 2024 Super User Posted July 4, 2024 Looks like me after hitting the local Chinese buffet. The only bait I've had that happen with (that I can remember at least) is a 6th Sense Crush50. I emailed them with pics and they sent me a new one. 2 Quote
born2climb Posted July 4, 2024 Author Posted July 4, 2024 I emailed them and they asked for more info. I am hoping they'll send me replacements. I shall endeavor to keep them out of direct sunlight in the future. 1 Quote
Super User king fisher Posted July 4, 2024 Super User Posted July 4, 2024 The answer is very simple. The skinny one on the left is a male, the other two are females. You left them in the same tray and nature took over. Keep them in separate trays and you wont have a problem. 2 16 Quote

TNBankFishing Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 I’ve had them do that in my truck when I forgot my hard bait box over a weekend camping. Blew up 1/2 of them. Quote
Pat Brown Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 This thread is just a reminder that I am not wrong for fishing hard baits almost exclusively during the cold months in North Carolina 🤣🤣🤣👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Quote
born2climb Posted July 10, 2024 Author Posted July 10, 2024 Update: I received an email today from Lew's/Strike King, which included a gift card code to replace the swollen Red Eye Shad. Makes me more determined to support Strike King in the future. 😁 2 Quote

Dan N Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 Got me thinking, my boxes are always in truck or boat in garage , so both places get hot, but not sun. Just went out to check them 25-30 RES in lipless mix and them and other various brands all looked good . Is it from sun? Quote
MAN Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 I have had it happen to certain baits but not an ABS bait. Quote

My boxes stay in a hot garage and have had no issues Quote
fin Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 There was a post here within the past couple of years where someone lost a whole Plano type box full of RES like this. His were stored in the compartment in the side of his boat, if I remember correctly, so they weren't exposed directly to the sun, but were basically sitting in an oven. Bugs me I can't find that old post. Quote
Firstoutfisher Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 Has anyone tried fishing with a swollen RES? Wonder what kind of action theyd have and if theres risk of it blowing up 1 Quote

born2climb Posted July 13, 2024 Author Posted July 13, 2024 I’d say it was due to sun, though I’ve left that same tackle tray out before. Perhaps it was just in more direct sun than other times. Quote
