What's your best bassin' skill? And your worst?

There's not really a technique that I feel incompetent with anymore, though I would say I'm average with most things and not much above that. I'm not very good at calling it quits and I'm not very good at being nice to myself when it doesn't go well. I do better in that regard with a buddy, way easier for me to not take it personally if we're both struggling

One skill that I thought would be my worst is turning out to be one of my best, and that's punching heavy cover while seated in a kayak. Most all standard techniques related to that skill are for standing only, usually from a boat. I can certainly stand in my kayak to do it but I don't like to. So I was forced to adopt my own techniques if I wanted to continue. Point is: sometimes a skill perceived as unobtainable or bad can turn into something obtainable and great. Just gotta do it!

There are so many things I don't do well. Some of my scores, on a 0 to 10 scale:

 

Pitching: 0

Flipping: 0

Punching: 0

Operating electronics: 0

Jig fishing: 0.5

Remembering the names of lures: 1

Keeping bass from burrowing in deep, matted weeds: 1

 

And so on and on and on....

Okay serious answer sort of:

 

Strong: being sneaky/covering water/presenting baits from far away.

 

Weaknesses: boat positioning/staying quiet/fishing one spot for too long/being on top of the fish and hoping they are gonna be stupid.

I'm sure if you worked on some of those, you could bring them up substantially. You certainly have the drive, stamina, and the time to do so.

Pat, you and I fish a lot alike. Your fishing style, of all the BR guys, is closest to mine. I too am a sneaky scooter who uses my lures like artillery shells.

I'm happy with how I fish. I would like to become jig proficient and I'll be tossing a jig tomorrow morning. I'm not interested in electronics because I don't want to carry a battery. I don't think I'll ever get better at remembering the names of lures because descriptions like "a pink popper" work for me. And pitching, flipping, and punching are standing techniques. I catch plenty of fish as a sneaky scooter who uses lure like artillery shells, also known at the @Pat Brown School of Bassin'.

 

I would like to have 40 minutes in @Catt's Heaven, where he catches 35 or more pounds of bass in merely 40 minutes! And I'd like to hook just one of @WRB's bass in the teens. That's all I want. Not too much to ask, is it? 🤣

Yep, they sure are but they can be done comfortably sittin in a kayak! If you really want to do something, there's always a way....a will, a way!

Don't need to punch in my neck of the woods, but I flip and pitch a ton from seated in my Yak. 🤷‍♂️

You definitely get better distance with this technique when standing in a boat, but you can get closer and be stealthier in a yak, so it doesn't make much difference.

Worst: Changing line on a reel too often, swapping baits on a pole because I watched too much youtube. Buying everything I see on Tactical Bassing, time management leaving the lake/pond, (one more cast) keeping up with Japanese trends.

 

Best: I can sit at a lake for 12hrs
