Lighter weight rod. It’s a Diawa tatula elite (non ags) 7’3 MH/F. I had been using a old Abu Garcia 7’0 MH/F

I would suspect maybe you feeling the bite sooner, setting hook sooner, before the really inhale it. But I’ve also had frustrating days when some throw the jig. Sometimes I think they are just not as aggressive on the bite.

That rod has a softer tip that makes it more versatile.  Sweep the rod and lean into your hooksets.  If the Abu rod was an old Veritas then those were broom handles with stiff slow loading tips.

It happens. Try not to give them much slack once you set the hook. If they swallow a jig you were waay too late.
