Super User bowhunter63 Posted June 24, 2024 Super User Posted June 24, 2024 Been getting killed so far on hook sets with a fluke. What’s your guys set up line hooks etc. I’m about 2 for 10. 1 Quote

It’s a thinner hook for good penetration, but I have never bent one out even on 40 inch pike. 2 Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted June 25, 2024 Super User Posted June 25, 2024 Pretty much the same as frydog but 14-16# sunline mono. I’m fishing one of my falcons but in the same power and length range depending which one I grab. better question is, what is YOUR setup that isn’t working? 1 Quote

Super User MIbassyaker Posted June 25, 2024 Super User Posted June 25, 2024 Another vote here for the Owner twist lock light. I've been using either a St. Croix 6'8" MXF mojo caster with 12lb big game, or 6'8" MXF Avid X Spinning 15lb power pro to 10lb PLine CXX leader. 1 Quote
softwateronly Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 @bowhunter63 there's a lot of give in your set up. Do you have a MH/F rig or the option of adding braid to the current set up? scott edit - Or is there room for improvement on the hookset? Have you reeled down on them and swept to the side while still reeling? 1 Quote
Tackleholic Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 10 or 15# braid, #14 Owner swivel, 6 or 8# mono. leader, 1/0 or 2/0 lightweight dropshot hook, nose hook a super fluke jr or super fluke, keep rod tip at 10 or 11:00, twitch the fluke to keep it on the surface. Seldom miss a hook set. 1 Quote

Super User Bird Posted June 25, 2024 Super User Posted June 25, 2024 Nose hooked increases hookup ratio but I like throwing flukes in grass so it's not an option there. I like a heavy wire Gamakatsu screw lock 4.0 on a MH, the heavy wire hook eliminates the necessity for added weight. Yes, the fluke is going to miss fish, always has for me " other than nose hooked " but it's effective. Try treating it like a frog and let the fish have it. 4 Quote
TonynswAR Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 Bird, I use this at times on rivers for smallies, works great 3 Quote

They are sharp and not crazy heavy so you should get a good penetration. A true medium is a little light so you have to have the line tight before you sweep the rod. Even more so if it’s not a fast action. Long casts won’t help. Braid would help, but if that’s just an all purpose rod then that’s a big change for everything. Next trip out I would just change your hookset. When one hits it, reel down tight with the tip pointed at the fish and sweep the rod fully while you keep reeling. 1 Quote

JackstrawIII Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 6'10 MH Tatula rod 40lb braid with a leader Owner weighted Twistlok hook (usually 3/0 size with 1/8oz weight) I've also had good results with EWG hooks, but the twistlok makes baits last much longer and has an even better hookup ratio, in my experience. 2 Quote
waymont Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 G Loomis 852 JWR 20lb braid to 12lb FC leader, or 843 MBR 30lb braid to 12 or 15lb FC leader depending on how heavy the cover is. Almost never lose fish with these setups. either 7 or 8 speed reels. I feel like having a faster ration reel allows me to catch up to fish, and get solid hook sets. For me braided line is essential to get the best action, and get solid hook sets. Always use a 3/0 superline EWG gammy hook. 2 Quote

A super fluke or dshad are fine also. Anything smaller and it’s a spinning rod. 2 Quote

CDMTJager Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 In the three lakes I do 90% of my bass fishing by first week of May weeds are so thick you must fish all soft plastics 100% weedless. So bare hook rigging is not an option for me. 7'3" Shimano Intenza MHFA spinning rod Kast King Royal legend Glory size 4000 5.25" Cabela's Shadee Shad 5" Zoom Super Fluke 20lb Sufex 832 braid size 1# ball bearing swivel to 16-18" 12lb or 15lb Yo-Zuri Copolymer #4/0 Owner Twistlock light hook #4/0 Gamakatsu Super Like Spring lock hook I had hooking up issues using a 3/0 hook and came here asking for advice same as you. Members here suggested I upsize hooks from a 3/0 to 4/0 and I did and my hookup percentage went up significantly. Now if I do my part correctly detecting a bite and make a good tight line sweeping hook set I hook up of at least 80% of the time. This is my first year ever fishing soft plastic flukes worked as a weedless soft plastic jerk bait in heavy weeds and lily pads and I am do ing absolutely fantastic catching bass with them. 1 Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted July 4, 2024 Super User Posted July 4, 2024 Zoom Super Fluke always worked best with a 4/0 EWG hook , try the new Gamakatsu Hybrid EWG hook as it has more hook gap resulting in better hook ups than most EWG hooks . 1 Quote

Brian11719 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 I use a 7'3" medium heavy / fast action spinning rod with 15lb braid and a 10lb leader. 3/0 ewg hook with a 1/8oz weight for actual flukes or no weight for a caffeine shad...can't say I've had this problem and this setup works awesome for me and is one of the main reasons I own a spinning and casting medium heavy rod (I like the casting rod for jigs and heavier texas rigs but the spinning rod for 3.8" keitechs and flukes).
