Been a few years since I've updated my flipping rod. Have a few different brands and have them balanced with handle weights. I know alot of the newer rods are lighter but would like to find one that's balanced without weights.  Can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance

are you talking true flipping with 8’ rods and barely using the reel?  Or do you mean heavy pitching?

I'd pinky bet he means pitching. Even most pros call pitching flipping these days.

I agree, but it’s always worth asking. Especially when he mentioned handle weights. That was the only way you could fish the 8’+ flippin sticks on older tip heavy blanks.

I have a Tatula Elite AGS 7’6” flipping stick (the old gen). It’s very well balanced. AGS guides really help balance a rod.

Currently doesn’t have a designated reel but I’m planning on getting a JDM Zillion HD with the long handle. A long handle reel is helpful for cranking them out. Line capacity doesn’t really matter with flipping too much either

Dobyns is what you need

Ultimate flipping stick?  Valkyrie 76 XXH.  It weighs a ton but balances out to the point that it floats without a reel on it.  You can also punch heavy tungsten or pitch 2.5 oz swimbaits.  It's a monster of a rod.

My best pitching setup ever is my kistler helium 7'3" hmh paired with a jdm zillion, 6.2oz reel + 3.5oz rod, under 10oz total with line. I can pitch and punch all day long fatigue free, the power to weight ratio on this setup is silly.

I have 4 setups   I flip/pitch/punch a lot in Fl.    my favorite setup is an 8 foot MHX blank that I wrapped myself. very well balanced not tip heavy at all, and I like a shorter than normal handle length. micro guides, ECSM reel seat, beast of a rod. love it.

Well I settled on a Phenix feather 7-7 heavy. So far I'm very impressed.  Very light and incredibly sensitive.  Maybe a little light for pads and punching but perfect flipping and pitching more open water. May order a xh when the cash flow allows lol. Thanks for the replies.

Sounds odd but I’m now pitching on two rods with steez ct svs.

1. 3/8 -1oz Steez AGS Power Pitch with a Steez CT SV & Cortland 50lb silent flip - Total weight = 9.6oz

2. 1/2 - 1.5oz Expride 7’3XH with a Steez CT SV& Cortlanf 50lb silent flip - Total weight = 9.7oz

3. 3/8 -1.5Oz Expride 7’7H with a Zilion & 131 50lb - Total weight = 11oz

I do put a 100mm handle on all of them

I am weird and actually prefer pitching with a shorter rod with a shorter handle.  I currently use a 7'1" SC with a 9" grip.  I am much more accurate and the shortened handle length does not get caught up as easily in my sleeves.

We don't know were you are from so it's difficult to suggest the proper rod and reel combo.  I fish North and my favorite Pitching Combo is a Shimano Zodias 7 foot 3 rod in HEAVY combined with a Metanium reel and 20 pound fluoro.  The combo is what makes for balance.

The shimano poison Adrena 7’6XH is what I use though I don’t pitch often. It’s super light weight, balanced, plenty of power, and a good tip. Doubles as my heavy swimjig and beast hook magdraft freestyle rod. ALF has it for $225 while supplies last and is a good deal in my opinion.

You punch at all with this rod?

Don’t really mat up on my lake.  So not really.  Mostly pitching at dense clumps or the spaces around.  It feels “slightly” less powerful than a 7’3 & 7’6XH expride but significantly lighter weight if that helps you gauge.
