Considering that I've been fishing for a number of years and, well, collecting a lot of rods and reels, I have a question about organization. How do you all do it? How do you organize your Rods? What rod holders do you use? It's getting to the point with me where if I want to find one I need a treasure map to do it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

An article comes to mind something like “Rod organization” and if memory serves A-jay describes how he uses Rod sleeves of certain colors to help him with that. Hopefully it’s relevant to your question and hopefully my newly 50 year old brain remembers this correctly lol

Thanks. I'm sure it's better than my soon to be newly 70 year old brain! 🤦

lol well … I’m tech challenged and I’ve tried to find the thread. Wish I knew how to #A-jay to get him in here but I think he just color coordinated rod sleeve colors to help identify quickly what type of combo it was

I do use color coded rod sleeves to locate sticks in the rod locker.

Which admittedly is often full most of the time.

Still have to 'remember' which color means what.

But I can usually get it pretty close.

76+ now, so got you guys beat in one category! :)

Before moving from PA, my rods were all placed upright along basement walls.  I'd like a better method now.  My thought was to put two 1x4 boards vertically on a wall in the smallest room I have.  Then using small brackets, evenly space (3-4 inches apart) horizontal 1x4s on which to lay rods without any reels mounted for maximum storage in minimum space.

However, it didn't take long for me to realize this wouldn't be feasible.  Once a reel is mounted, I don't like to remove it unless I want to try another reel.  Thus I would need to make the horizontal boards longer.  Would alternate rod direction to minimize horizontal length.  Would be best to group rods by power.

No boat, so no rod locker.  Considering I have $100s in reel covers, I don't want to start investing in rod sleeves.  Probably not needed anyway since I am a shore fisherman and rods are placed between the car seats.  Take 10 rods max per outing.

Oh that's beautiful! At 72 rods I thought I was the only rod- aholic.

About 77 casting rods and 9 spinning.  Drug addict B-I-L stole the 7-8 rods I kept in Florida for visits.  Have about 25 more casting reels than rods.  Been buying since March, 2009.

You are my forever friend! Love it. My weakness are rods/reels that are on major sale: 50% or more off. Hard to say no unless it's s Googan rod. 😁

I looked at your profile and see you have an interest in acoustic guitars. Now I know you're my brother! I've been playing for about 50 years.

Me too!!  Best rod deal was a $300 spinning rod for $75 TMD on closeout.  Got great deals when Pflueger closed out their baitcast reels.  $98 for Curado 51E on closeout.  Best used reel deal was $65 for excellent condition Patriarch XT.  The blue one.

Wish my parents could have afforded a regular teacher.  Guy they got me was someone they met in a local band.  Was 16.  First few songs were single notes.  Even 5-6 years later I was able to pick up a guitar and play them even tho I didn't know what note I was playing.  However, I quit after he gave me the first chord to learn.  Very difficult bar chord.  Couldn't do it.  When I started taking lesson around age 68, it was 2 years before I was shown a bar chord and it was a simple 3 stings with one finger instead of 3 strings with one finger and all 6 with another finger like when I was 16.

Ahhh. That's what I figured! Excellent!

I built my own wooden rack for 16 rod/reel setups. Labeled everything and have different rod sock color for spinning, casting and BFS...

Finally got it the way it makes sense to me, but no matter how much stuff you build, buy, or scrounge its still chaos.

Its just well labeled chaos.

For home storage - I built this rack. 24 slots originally one direction only, but I've since added a third vertical so I can alternate.

I've got several color combos of socks (red/black, blue/black, etc) and try to sort by general type...but inevitably I pull the sock up enough to read what rod it is when I'm selecting. Socks and covers come off when I pull a rod from the compartment in the boat and put it on deck.

That looks really nice and much better then those cheap circular ones they have in the stores.

A-Jay.  You may have retired from the Coast Guard, but you now work full time for the Bait Monkey.

Nice!  I see you don't mind stringing the rods every time you go out.  Always a pain for me with my eyesight.  That's why I prefer to keep reels on the rods.

Actually, that shot was this winter after I de-strung and stored the reels away. During the season, they're kept strung - ready to go.
