Super User Sam Posted January 13, 2007 Super User Posted January 13, 2007 I saw an ad for FireLine Crystal line from Berkley in the latest edition of Bass Times. Has anyone had the opportunity to try this line? How are you fishing it? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Quote
bitman Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 That stuff looks and sounds awesome, I wanna know too! I love braid but the water I fish is VERY clear! This might be the answer Dano Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 13, 2007 Super User Posted January 13, 2007 fireline is not a braid.it is fused. Quote
NEBassMan Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 I put it on my wifes spinning reel. (She picked it out because her name is Crystal ). I'll tell you first that it looks like dental floss. It's almost pure white. I don't know how it would work in clear water as all the water around here is stained. She loves it though. It casts very well on spinning gear. Never have any problems. Super User T-rig Posted January 13, 2007 Super User Posted January 13, 2007 Fireline is exactly where it ends up, in the fire, after a day of fishing! Hate the stuff! Power-Pro is the best!! (Tuff-Line is also good) Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted January 13, 2007 Super User Posted January 13, 2007 T-rig... reading between the lines, I'm picking up that you don't like Fireline very much. Comparing it to other non-fused braided lines what specifically don't you like about it... or what specifically about your preferred lines do you like about them. I've used Fireline in most of its variations since it was first sold in tests from 3lb to 20lb. on various spinning reels and baitcasting reels. I found the "passive memory" that was inherent with a fused line lessened the spooling problems and tip knot problems I had with other braided lines that were not fused. It fished more like limp mono than other braids I've used. I also feel that Fireline transmitted vibrations better than non-fused braids. I do wish it had a rounder cross-section. I fished with the Crystal color this entire past season and found that permanent marker coloring still washed off of the Crystal as it did on the Flame Green, but a "tinting" of the marker color remained as opposed to the Flame Green color returning unchanged. This allowed me to tint the last few feet of the Crystal to a light blue, green or brown as I wished determined by the fishing conditions. I do prefer the increased visibility of the Flame Green, however... especially in the very small diameters. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted January 13, 2007 Super User Posted January 13, 2007 I use 10lb. braid alot for finesse fishing and I love the knot strength of power pro and the abrasion resistence. The fireline has very weak knot strenght or at least the fine diameter has. Tie 10lb. power pro to 5/0 hook and try to break the line (almost impossible)! The 10lb. fireline breaks very easy just pulling with your bare hands. I tried palomar and clinch knots and it's allways the same. I know fireline isn't a true braid but why would you use that stuff if there is power pro! Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 13, 2007 Super User Posted January 13, 2007 why would you use power pro when there is sufix?ROFLMAO!!!! ;Dactually fireline does cast better on a spinning rod than regular braid IMHO.i don't use it but my wife does and she never had breakage or knot issues.maybe you got a bad spool. CyBasser Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 Hi there, I mostly use PowerPro, but I had to write a review for the Fireline Crystal for a local publication recently, so I was given the chance to use the actual stuff. I have used Fireline in the past and I was not too happy. The Crystal (20lb dia) surprised me pleasantly. It is still more stiff than powerpro but less so than other Firelines. Did not have any of the problems Daniel is referring to above (maybe you got a spool from a bad bunch?). Abrasion resistance was better than on the pink fireline I used for hi-vis. Certainly improved casting performance on spinning equipment. I can't confirm the "invisibility" claim, certainly it is not visible below the surface as seen from above. It has quite a hi visibility though above water despite its milky appearance, I could actually see it better in low light compared to the pink one. I still have the line I tested on a spool and use it often for actual fishing with no problems whatsoever that I would blame on the line. As I said, I'm a powerpro fun. I still prefer it over Crystal, maybe because I'm used to it. But I would certainly consider crystal if I was worried about line visibility. Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 I've been using Fireline since it came out, I tie palomars 100% of the time and can't ever remember having a line break. Straightened a few hooks tho. Looking forward to trying the Crystal this year. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 14, 2007 Super User Posted January 14, 2007 I have tried a couple of spools of fireline and at first, thought it was going to be new favorite line of choice. But after just a couple of days of fishing, it just was wore out. I have since stayed with PowerPro and Suffix for braid. Quote
